HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer

Hello -

I can no longer use the ENVY 5540 as a wireless scanner since I upgraded to MacOS 15.  (Another user with an older MacOS still can scan.)

This fails with HP Scan and with Image Capture.  (The ENVY works fine as a wireless printer.)

When I "Open Scanner" in the ENVY entry in the printer settings, MacOS brings up Image Scanner. It  gives a "Waiting for scanner" message, then error -12345 is generated ("Failed to open a connection to the device").

Power cycling the ENVY does not solve the problem.

How can I get the ENVY work again as a wireless scanner?

Thank you.

@mac-raster, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP Envy 5540!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since your printer still works fine for wireless printing but not scanning, it sounds like a compatibility issue between MacOS 15 and the scanner drivers. Here are a few things we can try:

Update or Reinstall HP Easy Scan & Drivers

Go to HP’s Software & Driver Downloads page.

Enter ENVY 5540, select MacOS 15, and download the latest scanning drivers.

If you already have HP Easy Scan, uninstall it, then reinstall the latest version from the Mac App Store.

Reset the Printing System on Mac

Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click (or Control + Click) on the HP ENVY 5540 and select Reset Printing System.

Re-add the printer and try scanning again.

Try Apple’s Built-in Scanner Drivers

Open Image Capture or Preview > File > Import from Scanner.

If the scanner is detected, test if you can scan.

Check for MacOS Permissions

Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access.

Ensure HP Easy Scan or Image Capture is allowed access.

 Try a USB Connection

If wireless scanning still doesn’t work, try scanning via a USB cable.

If scanning works over USB, it could be a network protocol issue with MacOS 15.

If none of these steps work, let me know what you’ve tried, and we can dig deeper!

Looking forward to getting your scanner back up and running.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for your detailed reply.  Here are the results of trying the things you suggest.

1.  I deleted the existing HP SW on my Mac and tried to reinstall the drivers and HP Scan.  HP Scan installed OK, but HP Easy Start-2 repeatedly hung during the survey section.

2. Followed all the other steps.

3.  Could not wireless scan with any app.  All had problems connecting.

4. I could successfully USB scan with apps.

What do you recommend for the next steps?

Matt
