So I recently got an HP OfficeJet Pro 9015 and I tried to access the EWS via hostname but it failed. However, when I tried to connect that web page by IP it succeeded. Could someone please tell me what is going on? Thanks.

From my perspective (primarily Windows), this behavior is entirely normal.
I would guess the printer simply cannot make use of the hosts name definitions in your network.

The method used to open the Embedded Web Server (EWS) is not a problem - it is a limitation.
It is possible to reach / open the EWS printer homepage from within HP Smart. The results are the same - the printer is using the IP address connection - the access method does not require that you type in the address to open EWS from within the application (the printer is already connected to the network).
Using the Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
Excerpted
- For printers connected to a local network: Obtain the printer IP address, the unique identification number assigned to the printer on the network, and enter it into a web browser address bar.
- Use the HP Smart app: Available through the printer settings in the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
- Connect to the printer with Wi-Fi Direct: Set up this direct wireless connection to the printer, and then enter the IP address 192.168.223.1 into a web browser address bar.
