I have a new laptop and tried installing a driver for my venerable and 100% functional hp printer - a HP 6980dt.
The windows 10 '/add a printer dialog, even after a 'windows update' of the driver list does not show this printer. The HP site also does not show the driver. I have an older laptop, also running Windows 10 64 bit, and this installed a driver and is working fine.
Are there any alternative drivers I could install??
TIA

Welcome to the HP Forums!
Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.
I reviewed your post and I understand that you are facing issues installing the printer on your new computer.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
I checked the specifications of your printer and see that there are no drivers available for Windows 10 for this printer. However, you can go ahead and install the Windows built-in drivers for the printer.
Here is how it is done.
First root uninstall the printer.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the PC
Then follow the steps in the below article to install the printer.

You refer to the built-in Windows Printer driver.
I cannot find anything resembling this in the Drop-down list of printers for HP 6980. I am confused about what you are suggesting. Windows can see my printer, but thee is nothing in the list of drivers. A 'windows update' on the list still does not obtain it.
I must be misunderstanding something you have written

There is somethin that is definitely not working here.
I run through your instructions (extract included here for clarification)
Step 3: Install the print driver with the Add a Printer wizard
followed by:
The printer I want isn't listed, and then select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.
followed by:
Select Add a printer using TCP/IP address or hostname, and then click Next.
Select Autodetect from the Device type drop-down list.
Type your printer IP address into the text box, and then click Next.
To find the printer IP address, print a Wireless Network Test report or a Network Configuration page.
Wait for the computer to connect to the printer, and then click Next to install the print driver.

Whwn I click NEXT I see all the available printer drivers and there is none for this printer!!
Do I need to select from some form of generic Windows printer.??... but could not find that either!
What am I doing wrong?
I can only assume you think that HP Deskjet 6980 is still included as a built-in driver in Windows 10 latest build ... but I would suggest it is not.

Hi,
You may manually download the driver from Microsoft as following:
- Save the following drivers to your desktop:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/driver/drvs/2011/07/4753_fc148f3df197a4c5cf20bd6... - Using any extracting tool such as Winzip or Winrar, extract it to a subfolder on your desktop.
- Right-click the Start button and select Run, paste the following and press OK:
printui /s /t2 - Click the Add button,
- Press Next.
- only keep X64 checked and press Next.
- Click Have Disk and browse the extracted folder, then press OK.
- Select the HP Deskjet 6980 series and complete the wizard, then close that window
- Connect the printer to your PC and try printing.
