The SaveAs button is always grayed-out on the Priinting Shortcuts menu, no matter which shortcut is displayed. It wasn't until a driver update added a 'Default' shortcut which is always selected first and this issue means it cannot be modifed and renamed.

Assuming the Full Feature Software is still installed and is functional,

If it is working as expected,

"Locked shortcuts" are templates and can be used "as is" or modified and then saved as a Custom Shortcut

Select a shortcut - make changes (on the right side),

After one or more settings are changed, the "Save As" button should activate.

Thank you for a very complete reply. However, depicts an older version of Windows than version 1809 build 17763.437 of Windows 10 Pro.

I tried to track the process in Settings and got the similar screens for my printer. I modified "Fast/Economical Printing" for smaller paper and landscape, but there was no obvious way to "accept" the changes. Whenever I get to the shortcuts list the Save button remains greyed out. the HP Smart software wanders around, but doesn't get there either.

Do you have a Win 10-1809 version of your explanation?

Discussion only - no facts:

Well, I am running Windows 10 Professional (x64) Version 1809 (build 17763.437) .

In my experience, the very exact Windows Version (generally) has no bearing on the printer software except that the farther away from the 2017 timeframe (when the 6968 version 40.11 printer software was released), the more Windows 10 changes - at some point the printer software may struggle to keep up with the File System.  I do not think the printer version / vintage is at fault in this instance (a guess based on a little experience) - if the printer software supports creating a custom shortcut, Windows is likely to honor that - the ability to create the shortcut is within the Full Feature Software and not dependent on the less robust windows print drivers.

I do not have any control over the HP documentation provided - it is frequently out of date but the general concepts are usually solid.  For example, if the printer software ever allowed one to create a Custom Shortcut in the first place, it is not something that disappears.  The look may change - the functionality should remain.  (Opinion)

The examples I provided are the two printers I currently have in operation - the 8630 is aging a bit (2015 software) - the 8740 is a year old.

Not sure what else I can do - I don't have your printer model and have no way to test what you are experiencing.

Try modifying a different shortcut??

I will think on it; if I come up with anything I think is useful, I will post back.
