I am trying to print from an old laptop running Windows 7 (64bit) to a new Envy 6530e printer. I have it working on a new desktop running the latest version of Windows so there is nothing wrong with the printer. I have downloaded the Universal Print Driver and the printer is visible in Settings - Devices and Printers but when I try to print a test page it comes up with an error. Is there a configuration I need to change in the print driver to get it to work?

What was the error?
There are both PCL and PDF drivers
https://support.hp.com/au-en/drivers/hp-universal-print-driver-series-for-windows/4157320
Install the PDF driver if not already installed.
Using Word or whatever word processor, windows 7 application you have, print to a PDF file, not the printer.
Bring up HP smart, browse to that PDF file and try printing it.
If you have errors creating the PDF file then Windows 7 does not have (or cannot find) the library or tools needed to create a PDF in the first place. AFAIK, Microsoft disabled the windows 7 update servers long ago.

Hi BeemerBiker, thank you for the quick reply. To answer your first question here is a screenshot of the error message and the dialog box that opens when I select the Printer: Error tag.
I have tried both versions of the UPD (PS and PCL6) and both give the same result with pdf files and other files. Do you have any other suggestions that could resolve it? Thank you.

Your printer is on the network, is that correct? if so, the port should be a WSD port, not an LPT port. WSD was first introduced in Vista and your win7 system should find the printer and assign a WSD port to it.
This video shows how to connect to the router: 6100
Wi-Fi Direct is explained on page 23 of the User Manual, this Wi-Fi setup avoids configuring the router. You will need HP Smart application for this. If using Wi-Fi direct, possibly the port used is TCP 7236 instead of WSD. HP Smart is the application that will configure this. HP Smart may need to wakeup the printer before you can print, if using Wi-Fi direct.
It is too late to upgrade 7 to 10 or 11 for free but you can still upgrade and unless Microsoft changes their policy, win10 will run fine. You just have to put up with a reminder to activate. Let me know if you want to upgrade to 10 or 11 on your win7 system.
