HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The system: Desktop computer, Windows 10 Pro 64bit, fully patched. Plenty of RAM, HDD and processor (AMD). This system has been printing to this same printer for several years without a problem.

Then, a few weeks back, I could not print to the printer anymore. (By the way, all of this discussion is about using a USB cable - none of it is about using the printer's Ethernet printing.) Jobs would just sit in the print queue and never get processed.

The printer will print it's own info pages. I have installed the driver on my laptop, connected with the same Ethernet cable, and successfully printed from my laptop to this printer.

I have completely uninstalled the 1606 from my desktop, and attempted to reinstall it again - and the installation fails every time. I have the USB cable disconnected at the beginning of the driver install, and then connect it when instructed during the install procedure. Shortly after that, the install recognizes a new printer connected and continues, then abruptly fails and quits with an error box saying "Printer installation failed. A new printer was not installed."

I know the printer is OK because I can print to it fine from my laptop.

I'm at a loss.

Anyone have any ideas?

Anyone from HP there? I really could use some help to figure this out. I need this printer back online and don't really need the usual scripted answers about uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver, which I've already done.

- Is this some kind of conflict between the HP Printer Driver and a recent Windows Update?

- Is there any kind of "complete unistall" utility that HP makes that can **truly** uninstall everything that HP has put on a system to make it back as if there were never any HP products installed?

HP - Please advise.

Hi @billbled,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn Printer. I really appreciate your efforts in trying the basic troubleshooting steps.

Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue. As you requested yes there is a way to uninstall the application from your PC completely and it's called root uninstallation.

I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2) Select your HP Printer

3) Select Uninstall

4) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”

😎 Click on the “Drivers” tab

9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10) Select Ok

11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12) Close Devices and Printers.

Use this link to download and install the new driver. Configure the printer and try printing.

I would suggest you try the Windows built-in drivers. Follow the steps below:

•    Go to Control Panel - Devices and printers - Click on "Add printer" and follow the on-screen instructions.

•    When the page prompts for the drivers, select "Windows update". The driver list will be updated.

•    Click HP, Hewlett Packard, or Hewlett-Packard in the Manufacturer pane, and then click the name of your printer in the Printers pane.

Refer to this document HP printer setup (Windows built-in driver) for help.

Update the printer firmware

  • Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product
  • Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi,

Sorry but everything you suggested was a strike out. Nothing worked.

Again, I will re-iterate:

- The HP driver will not install. Therefore, there is NO HP printer currently installed, and thusly, none is available to remove either in "Devices and Printers" or the printui.exe function.

Originally, the driver crashed after it instructed me to connect the printer. I'm doing a USB install. After I connected the USB cable, within a minute the driver stopped with a message "Failed to install".

Now, all it does is continue in the screen "New device is now connected" after I connect the USB cable as instructed. I've watched the "thermometer bar" installation progress over and over and over for more than 15 minutes, by the clock. Then I just stopped the installation since it wasn't working.

So, none of what you suggested is applicable or works in my situation.

Any other ideas?

As further troubleshooting, I have an HP M452dw printer available and I have installed it on my same computer and it installed fine and prints fine.

Also, please remember that I stated that my laptop installed the HP 1606dn fine and printed fine to it.

So I am certain that the problem is NOT the HP 1606dn printer itself, since the laptop can use it and print to fine.

The problem is somewhere in your driver software on my desktop computer. (Doing a complete software reset on this computer is NOT an option).

Sorry - Not spending money so more "HP Employees" can display their incompetence to me. I'll move on to another printer manufacturer. Had enough of HP's crap to last a lifetime. This 1606 was the last straw. Good-bye and good riddance.
