Hello, I've read all over here that my Officejet 4650 will print card stock paper.

I  know at one time I used card stock but now it reads that I'm out of paper.

I can put 10 or just 1 in the tray and still reads out of paper

I've tried over and over and still won't catch the card stock. Help!

Hi @Tillykk4527,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

It sounds really frustrating to be unable to print on cardstock, especially when it has worked before! Let’s work through some questions and troubleshooting steps that might help you resolve the “out of paper” issue on your HP OfficeJet 4650.

  • Can you confirm that the cardstock you are using is the same type and size you previously printed on? Sometimes, even slight variations can cause the printer to have trouble recognizing the paper.
  • When you place the cardstock in the tray, do you ensure that it’s aligned properly with the paper guides? Improper alignment can often lead to feeding issues.
  • Have you checked if the paper tray is clean and free of any debris or dust? Sometimes, even small particles can interfere with the printer’s ability to detect the paper.

Try the steps below.

  • Adjust Paper Guides:
  • Remove the cardstock from the tray, adjust the paper guides to fit snugly against the cardstock, and then reinsert the paper. Make sure the guides are not too tight, as this can cause jams.
  • Proper alignment ensures that the printer recognizes the cardstock correctly.

Check Paper Settings:

  • Go into your printer settings on your computer and ensure that the paper type is set to cardstock. You can usually find this under the “Print Preferences” or “Printer Properties” section.
  • Incorrect paper settings can lead to miscommunication between your computer and the printer, causing the “out of paper” message.

Clean the Paper Feed Rollers:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it, and locate the paper feed rollers. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to gently clean the rollers.
  • Dust and debris can build up on the rollers, affecting their ability to grip the paper properly.

Try a Different Paper Size or Type:

  • If possible, try inserting a different type of paper, such as regular printer paper, to see if the printer recognizes it.
  • This can help determine whether the problem lies with the cardstock itself or the printer’s ability to detect paper in general.

Perform a Printer Reset:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on again.
  • A reset can clear any temporary glitches that might be causing the printer to misread the paper status.

Update the firmware. Click here

If you’ve tried these steps and the issue persists,  as a last resort, let's try semi-full rest.

The reset instructions are specific to your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instructions to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

Keep me posted for further assistance
