Hi.

I have the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 that I bought in Mexico a while ago but I have moved to the US now, I need to change my region to the US for my printer to be able to use the HP 952 cartridges instead of the 954 that are the used in Mexico.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Hek117

That is a very common issue when moving between countries with HP printers! HP cartridges are region-locked, and your printer, purchased in Mexico (which uses the HP 954 series), needs to be reset to the US region to accept the widely available HP 952 cartridges.

The process to change the printer region is called a "Regionalization Reset" and must be performed with assistance from HP Technical Support.

This is a specific, locked procedure because performing the wrong reset can permanently damage the printer. HP agents use special codes or a remote utility specific to your printer's firmware.

Prerequisites for Regionalization Reset

Before contacting HP, you must have the following ready:

  • Original Ink Cartridges: Have a complete set of the cartridges from the new region (HP 952) that you want to use in the US.

  • Computer Connection: The HP support agent will likely require you to connect the printer directly to a computer using a USB cable (not Wi-Fi).

  • Full Software: Ensure the HP Smart App is installed on your computer, as the reset procedure is often initiated through a hidden menu within the software.

Step-by-Step Guide to Request the Reset

The fastest and most reliable way to get this done is by contacting HP support directly and explaining that you moved countries.

  1. Contact HP Support (US):

    • Go to the official HP Support website for the US: HP Customer Support.

    • Enter your product name: HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.

    • Select Troubleshooting or Technical Support.

    • Look for the option to Contact Support via phone or chat.

  2. Explain Your Situation:

    • Clearly state: "I moved from Mexico (using HP 954 cartridges) to the US (where I need to use HP 952 cartridges). I need a Regionalization Reset for my HP OfficeJet Pro 8710."

    • Mention that you have the new HP 952 cartridges ready.

  3. Follow the Agent's Instructions:

    • The agent will either send you a Private Message with specific button-press sequences (if contacting through the HP Community forum) or guide you through a hidden menu in the HP Smart App or printer software.

    • This procedure will reset the printer's regional lock, allowing it to accept the US-version cartridges (HP 952).

Important Note: The reset is a one-time operation. Once the region is changed, your printer will permanently accept the HP 952 series cartridges.

The most efficient way to handle the region change is by using HP's official support channels. Here is the recommended contact information and the crucial details you should have ready when you speak to the HP representative.

Recommended Method (Online Portal):

  1. Go to the official HP Support website: HP Customer Support - Contact.

  2. Enter your product name: HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.

  3. Describe the issue as: "Need regionalization reset from Mexico to US for 952 cartridges."

  4. Choose the Chat or Call option provided by the portal.

Information to Have Ready for the HP Agent

When the HP agent assists you with the Regionalization Reset, they will need specific information to ensure they apply the correct code to your printer. Please have the following items readily available:

  • Printer Model: HP OfficeJet Pro 8710

  • Original Region: Mexico (using HP 954 cartridges)

  • New Region: United States (needs to use HP 952 cartridges)

  • Serial Number: This is usually found on a sticker on the back of the printer or inside the cartridge access door.

  • Ready Cartridges: Confirm that you have a full set of new HP 952 cartridges (US version) ready to install after the reset is complete.

  • USB Cable: Have a USB cable handy. The agent often requires you to connect the printer directly to a PC or laptop during the process.

This process ensures your printer's firmware is updated to accept the new US-region cartridges permanently.

I hope the above is helpful!

Hi @Hek117,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We need to perform a regional reset on the printer to resolve this issue.

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

To perform a printer region reset you need to meet the following conditions:

1. You need to have the printer full feature software installed on your computer.

2. You need to have all the cartridges either from the region/country from where the printer was purchased originally or the new region/country to which you want to reset it to.

3. Make sure HP Smart App is installed too.

I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀
