HP Color Laser MFP 178nwg
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I have recently purchased a MFP 178nwg printer and installed it using the following driver: HP_Color_Laser_MFP_178_179_Full_Software_and_Drivers_1.20.exe on Windows 11.
The installation dialog was in English, but to my surprise after the installation the printer related dialogs, like paper / printer properties, are shown in Russian. The OS language settings are set to English - so I am puzzled as to why the driver decided to switch to Russian.

I tried reinstalling the driver, but found no option to set the language.

How can I set the language / locale of the printer?

Hi @oa_munich,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Color Laser MFP 178nwg printer software defaulted to a different language. You can try the following methods to change the language for the printer driver dialogs.

Check Regional Settings in HP Printer Software:

  • Open the HP Printer Assistant or any other printer software that was installed with the driver.
  • Go to Settings or Preferences and look for Language or Regional Settings. If there’s an option for language, set it to English.

Check Windows Language and Region Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language in Windows.
  • Ensure that English is set as the default display language.
  • Then, go to Region and make sure the Country or Region is set to a region where English is the primary language.
  • After changing these settings, restart your computer and check if the printer dialogs switch to English.

Uninstall and Reinstall the Driver with a Clean Installation:

  • Uninstall the current driver by going to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps (or Programs and Features in the Control Panel) and removing any entries related to the HP Color Laser MFP 178nwg.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download the latest driver from the HP support website, ensuring you select English as the download language on the site.
  • Run the installer and look for any options related to language or region during the setup. Complete the installation and check if the dialogs are in English.

Try the Basic or Universal Print Driver:

  • If the above steps don’t work, you may also try installing an HP Universal Print Driver (UPD). The UPD often defaults to the OS language and might avoid the language mismatch. Download it from HP’s website, and select the English version.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
