I recently gave a printer (ENVY Inspire 7224e) to a friend as I did not like the requirement for a subscription, they do not seem to mind. They've tried to setup the printer however they're being prompted that it is

'associated with another account. you can use this printer and the HP smart app to print scan copy and more, but you will not have access to the cloud features like print anywhere. HP will provide information in the future when you can request access to use cloud features of this printer. (Error code: UA_400_EB000U0004).

For clarity this is not registered to my account. I've also asked my friend to check for firmware updates following a google search, but is there anything else?

Instant Ink Service / Contract

There is (and was) never a requirement that the printer be used with a subscription to Instant Ink.

Not.  Instant Ink is always optional.

If you did for any reason subscribe to the ink service and then leave the setup in place when you gave the printer to your friend, the printer is likely encumbered with the left over account and pieces of the service.  True, too, that if the printer was subscribed to the Instant Ink Service contract, all the subscription ink cartridges are now locked and cannot be used in any printer.

Regardless --

The printer can be set to rights -- doing so will require the help of an agent.

Your faster option:

What else?

HP+ Service / Contract

Separate from the Instant Ink service contract is the optional HP+ service.

If you signed up for HP+, for example, to avail yourself to the extended Warranty, then there are consequences to the decision that are not related to the Instant Ink service but do impact ink cartridge use AND monitoring of the printer for the purpose of managing the extended warranty service.
