HP LaserJet Pro M428fdw
Microsoft Windows 11

I have two HP LaserJet Pro M428fdw printers on my network. I just installed one on my PC, then renamed it under the Printer Properties. I then proceeded to install it again using the same HP software I downloaded from the internet. I was worried it was going to go through the whole process again, but fortunately it was smart enough to realize I already had the one printer installed, so it asked me if I wanted to add another printer. I chose Yes and it installed the 2nd printer. I went to rename it, but when I right clicked and selected properties, it kept giving me an error that the printer couldn't be found or the drivers were not installed. After getting frustrated, I checked the other printer, and it now showed there were two printers installed under it. I first I thought that would be fine, but then noticed the 2nd printer had the same name as the first that I had just renamed earlier. So I figured, ok, same name, but I'm sure the port/IP/hostname is different, but when I checked, the 2nd printer was also using the same port as the first printer.

What could've happened and why? Why is it so difficult to install two of the same printers on your PC with different names? Easy fix would be, just allow the user to edit the printer name during the actual installation or at least ask if the user would like to change it.

Also, how can you keep Windows from installing a printer as a WSD port type?
