Hello

We can no longer print with our HP LaserJet M140W from our chromebook.  It works from our android telephone and used to work no problem with the chromebook.  It says it cannot connect to the printer.  There is a red dot next to it, but when I scroll the list of printers, the same printer has a green dot next to it but I can't click on it. I have tried uninstalling printer. It says that it cannot automatically set up for M139-142 but I have to manually choose the printer model and M140 is not there.

Hi @Emmy1001

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your Chromebook is having trouble recognizing and properly setting up your HP LaserJet M140W printer after it previously worked fine.

Here are some steps to help troubleshoot and fix the issue:

1. Update Chromebook and Printer Firmware

On your Chromebook:

Go to Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates. Install any available updates.

On your printer:

Use the HP Smart app (on your Android phone) to check for firmware updates. If an update is available, follow the instructions to install it.

2. Remove and Re-add the Printer on Chromebook

Open Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers on your Chromebook.

Find your HP LaserJet M140W on the list and click the trash icon (remove it).

Restart your Chromebook and try re-adding the printer.

3. Manually Add the Printer

If automatic setup fails:

Go to Settings > Printers > Add Printer.

Under "Manually add a printer," input the following:

Name: HP LaserJet M140W

Address: Use the printer’s IP address (find it by printing a Network Configuration page from the printer).

Protocol: IPP (Internet Printing Protocol).

Queue: Leave blank unless specified in your printer manual.

If the M140W driver isn’t listed, select a generic HP printer driver.

4. Reset Printer’s Network Settings

On the printer, reset network settings to ensure a clean slate:

Hold the Wireless button until it starts blinking.

Use the HP Smart app to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi.

5. Enable Wi-Fi Direct (Optional)

If Wi-Fi setup continues to fail, use Wi-Fi Direct to connect your Chromebook to the printer:

Turn on Wi-Fi Direct from the printer (refer to the manual).

On your Chromebook, connect directly to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network.

Print without going through the main Wi-Fi network.
