My computer started printing a full document on only half a page. The issue is not with the printer because other pcs are normal and this has happend on two printers. I have tried all the fixes I could find but still the issue perisits. I have checked printer properties and stopped spools. It won't let me apply changes to form, I tried resolving this issue but to no avail.

Hi @printerproblemw,

Thank you for the response.

Try these steps:

Check Printer Settings:

  • Open Devices and Printers from the Control Panel.
  • Right-click your printer and select Printing preferences.
  • Make sure that the paper size matches the size of the paper you're using in the printer (e.g., A4, Letter).
  • Check the layout settings to ensure it's set to print one page per sheet.

Application Settings:

  • Sometimes, the problem can be specific to the application you are printing from.
  • In your application (e.g., Microsoft Word, PDF viewer), check the print settings to ensure the correct paper size and layout are selected.
  • Ensure scaling options are set correctly (e.g., "Fit to page" rather than "Zoom" or a specific scale setting like 50%).

Reinstall Printer Software:

  • Uninstall and then reinstall the printer drivers to reset any configuration issues.
  • Go to the HP Support website, search for your printer model, and download the latest driver software.

Print Preview:

  • Check the print preview before printing to ensure the document looks correct. If it's appearing correctly in the preview, the issue might be with how the printer is interpreting the print command.

Clear Print Queue:

  • Sometimes the print queue might cause issues with print jobs.
  • Open the print queue, cancel all jobs, and restart the print spooler service. To do this, open Command Prompt as an administrator and type:net stop spooler net start spooler

Update Windows:

  • Make sure your operating system is up to date as updates can help resolve compatibility issues that might affect printing.

Test with Different Applications:

  • If the issue persists across multiple applications, it could indicate a deeper system issue. Trying a test document from various applications can help isolate the problem.

I hope this helps.

My printer started having the same problem on 08/16/2025.  I have attempted to resolve the same issue that occurred on my HP Color Laser Jet MFP M180nw and have attempted to correct the problem following all recommendations without any resolution!! I have also attempted to print e-mail's, Word Documents. Test prints and HP Print and Scan Doctor provide no resolution!!! I'm extremely dissatisfied!!!  I have been faithful to HP product and HP Ink replacements on multiple printers for 25 years.  This has pushed me to my limit!

I did everything that was recommended!!

Hi,Thank you for you reply.  I have tried all of this. It is not a hp printer but every other computer has been printing normally. I think the issue may lie with the paper size but when I try to rectify this I am unable to press apply. Print preview looks normal and this issue presits through all applications. I have reinstalled the printer but  also I have used to different printers and same problem. Windows is up to date

Hi @printerproblemw,

Thanks for the detailed update, that really helps narrow things down. Since the issue follows your HP All-in-One PC (and not the printers), it does point to a Windows/software configuration problem rather than the hardware. Let’s try a few deeper steps:

Check Default Paper Settings in Windows

Press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter.

Right-click your default printer → Printer properties.

Go to the Device Settings tab and confirm the paper size is set to A4 or Letter (depending on what you use).

If “Apply” is greyed out, try running this step while logged in as an administrator account.

Force Reset Printing Defaults

Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.

Remove all installed printers (right-click → Remove).

Reboot your PC.

Reinstall the printer using the full driver/software package from the manufacturer’s website (not just Windows auto-detect).

Check Scaling at the System Level

Go to Settings > System > Display.

Ensure Scale & Layout is set to 100%.

Sometimes high-DPI scaling causes half-page printing.

Run System File Check

Open Command Prompt as administrator.

Run: sfc /scannow

Let it complete and repair any corrupted system files that might be interfering with print jobs.

Test with Microsoft Print to PDF

Try printing to Microsoft Print to PDF instead of a physical printer.

If the PDF file is also “half-page,” it confirms the problem is system/software related.

If none of these resolve the issue, the next best step would be to create a new Windows user profile and test printing from there. If it works correctly, we’ll know the problem lies within your user profile’s settings.

My Printer is a HP Color Laser Jet MFP M180nw.  (edited).  I purchased it new and have only used HP204 Laserjet cartridges.
