HP LaserJet MFP M140we Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have a Laser Jet M-140we and my laptop keeps telling me the printer needs user intervention. I have the HP Smart app downloaded but that doesn't help.

Hi @JTP53

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve this issue.

1. Check for Printer Errors or Alerts

  • Printer Display Panel: If your printer has a display, check it for any error messages, such as:
    • Paper jam
    • Low ink or toner
    • Out of paper
    • Cartridge issue
    • Wi-Fi or connection problem
  • Lights or Indicators: If your printer has indicator lights, check if any are flashing or showing error codes. Flashing lights typically indicate an issue that requires resolution

2. Check Paper Tray and Toner Cartridge

  • Paper Tray: Ensure that the paper is loaded properly, and there are no paper jams in the tray or inside the printer.
  • Toner Cartridge: Make sure the toner cartridge is correctly installed, and it’s not running low or empty. If the toner is empty, replace it with a new one.

3. Restart the Printer and Laptop

  • Restart the Printer: Turn off your printer, wait for 30 seconds, and then turn it back on. Sometimes, a simple restart can fix temporary glitches.
  • Restart the Laptop: Similarly, restart your laptop to ensure there are no software-related issues or glitches with the printing process.

4. Check the Printer Queue

Windows:

  1. Open the Printer Queue:
    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • Type control printers and hit Enter to open the Devices and Printers window.
    • Right-click your HP LaserJet MFP M140we and select See what's printing.
  2. Clear Stuck Print Jobs:
    • If there are any print jobs stuck in the queue, right-click and choose Cancel or Clear.
    • After clearing the queue, try printing again.

5. Reinstall Printer Drivers

  1. Uninstall the Existing Printer Drivers:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your HP LaserJet MFP M140we and choose Remove device.
  2. Download and Install Latest Drivers:
    • Visit the HP Support Website and download the latest drivers for your HP LaserJet MFP M140we for Windows 10 (32-bit).
    • Follow the instructions to reinstall the printer and drivers.

6. Check for Firmware Updates

  1. Open the HP Smart app or go to the HP Support website.
  2. Search for the latest firmware for your HP LaserJet MFP M140we and update the printer’s firmware if an update is available.

7. Reset the Printer (Factory Reset)

To reset your HP LaserJet MFP M140we:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons simultaneously while turning the printer back on.
  3. Continue holding the buttons until the printer resets.

8. Check for Connectivity Issues (Wi-Fi)

  1. Recheck Wi-Fi Settings:
    • Make sure your printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. You can check this from the printer’s Control Panel or HP Smart app.
  2. Reconnect the Printer to Wi-Fi:
    • If necessary, reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network by following the printer’s setup instructions.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
