HP DeskJet 2655 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I accidentally removed this printer off my laptop and cannot get it back. Both the laptop and printer are connected to my wi-fi network. Printer shows up on HP Smart as offline and when I try to re-add it, it's like a dead end.  I have turned everything off and on, the wi-fi network, laptop, printer, etc. I reset the printer to the wi-fi and it says connected. I do see the wi-fi direct option, but would really rather just get this printer back on my laptop with regular wi-fi. Any solutions? Thanks.

I resorted to using direct wi-fi option in Windows in order to print. The printer is still showing as offline and unavailable on HP Smart. I am concerned that this may affect my subscription to HP Instant Ink. I'm not sure what else to do to get this printer to show as online with HP.

Hi @DJAway

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP DeskJet 2655 is connected to Wi-Fi but still appearing offline in HP Smart. Here are some steps to get it back online:

1. Check Printer Connection Status

  • Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel.
  • Look for the IP address under Wireless or Network settings.
  • If the IP address is missing, reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi.

2. Restart Devices in Order

  • Turn off your printer, laptop, and router.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then turn on the router first.
  • Turn on the printer, then the laptop.

3. Reconnect the Printer to Wi-Fi

  • Press and hold the Wireless button on the printer until the Wi-Fi light blinks.
  • Press the WPS button on your router for 3 seconds.
  • Wait for the Wi-Fi light on the printer to turn solid blue.

4. Add Printer in HP Smart

  • Open HP Smart and click Add Printer.
  • Select your HP DeskJet 2655 from the list.
  • If it doesn’t appear, enter the printer’s IP address manually.

5. Check Windows Printer Settings

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click on your printer and select Manage.
  • Ensure Use Printer Offline is unchecked.

6. Reset Printer Network Settings

  • Press and hold the Wireless + Cancel buttons for 5 seconds.
  • Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi using HP Smart.

7. Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware update.
  • Install the update and restart the printer.

8. Verify HP Instant Ink Connection

  • Log in to your HP Instant Ink account and check if the printer is registered.
  • If it’s missing, re-add it using the HP Smart app.

Thank you for your reply. I have tried all the steps with no success. This printer was deleted off my computer completely and only appears as a wi-fi direct printer option to print. When working on these steps, the printer is not available to select in HP or Windows. When trying to add the printer or download firmware, the printer is not seen, so the necessary buttons are not highlighted and don't allow me to select them. I do appreciate your suggestions. I have been unable to find or re-add the printer.

It sounds like you've gone through a thorough troubleshooting process, but your HP DeskJet 2655 still isn't being detected properly over Wi-Fi—only appearing as a Wi-Fi Direct printer

That’s frustrating, especially since it’s not showing up in HP Smart or Windows when trying to add it.

Here are a few additional steps that might help:

Manually Assign a Static IP Address

  • If your printer isn’t appearing, it might not be properly connected to the network.
  • Try logging into your router’s settings and checking the list of connected devices.
  • If the printer is listed, note its IP address and manually enter it in HP Smart or Windows.

Check Router Settings

  • Some routers have AP Isolation or MAC Address Filtering enabled, which can prevent devices from communicating.
  • Log into your router and disable AP Isolation if it’s turned on.
  • If MAC filtering is enabled, add your printer’s MAC address to the allowed list.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • HP has a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor that can detect and fix connection issues.
  • Download it from HP’s support site and run a scan to see if it can locate your printer.

Try a Different Wi-Fi Network

  • If possible, connect the printer to a different Wi-Fi network (like a mobile hotspot) to see if it appears.
  • If it works on another network, the issue may be with your router’s settings.

Factory Reset the Printer

  • Since the printer was deleted from your computer, a full reset might help.
  • Press and hold the Wireless + Cancel buttons for 10 seconds to reset network settings.
  • Then, set up the printer from scratch using HP Smart.

Check Windows Firewall & Antivirus

  • Sometimes, firewall settings or antivirus software can block printer detection.
  • Temporarily disable your firewall and try adding the printer again.

Since your printer is only appearing as a Wi-Fi Direct option, it suggests that it’s broadcasting its own network but not properly connecting to your router. If none of these steps work, reinstalling HP Smart or trying a USB setup first might help establish the connection.

Let me know if any of these steps make a difference! We’ll get this sorted out. 🚀
