If you see the error message “You need a WIA driver to use this device. Please install from the manufacturer’s website.” while trying to scan with your HP printer, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.
Check for Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
- Scroll down and locate Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Right-click and select Properties.
- Set the Startup Type to Automatic and click Start (if it's stopped).
- Click Apply > OK, then restart your PC and try scanning again.
Reinstall the HP Printer Driver
- Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your HP printer and select Remove device.
- Visit the HP Support website and enter your printer model.
- Download and install the latest Full Feature Software and Drivers.
- Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP’s official website.
- Open the tool and select your printer.
- Click Fix Scanning and follow the on-screen instructions.
Check Windows Firewall and Antivirus
- Temporarily disable your firewall/antivirus and try scanning again.
- If it works, add an exception for your HP software in the firewall settings.

Install Windows Updates
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install any pending updates.
Manually Install the WIA Driver
- Open Device Manager (press Win + X > Device Manager).
- Expand Imaging devices or Printers.
- Right-click on your HP printer and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If no update is found, visit the HP Support website and manually download the WIA driver for your printer model.
If the issue persists, try scanning using a different application like Windows Fax and Scan or HP Smart. Let us know if you need further assistance!
