I’m having trouble setting up my printer again. I get sent to a page to enter my printer pin, I enter it, and it says it’s incorrect. What am I doing wrong?

Hi @BryceMikel

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the situation so clearly—and I truly regret the frustration this PIN error has caused during setup. When the printer PIN is rejected, even though you're following the on-screen instructions, it typically points to one of the following issues:

Steps to Resolve Printer PIN Rejection During Setup

1. Verify the Correct PIN Source

  • The PIN is usually printed on a label on the back or bottom of the printer, or displayed on the printer’s control panel during initial setup.
  • If the label is faded or missing, restart the printer and check the display again for a temporary PIN prompt.

2. Check for Expired or One-Time PIN

  • Some HP printers generate a temporary PIN that expires after a short time (e.g., 90 minutes).
  • If the printer was powered off or idle for a while, the PIN may no longer be valid.
  • Restart the printer and wait for a new PIN to appear on the screen.

3. Use HP Smart App with Network Reset

  • If the PIN continues to be rejected:
    • Reset the printer’s network settings via the control panel or by holding the Wireless and Cancel buttons together for 5 seconds.
    • Reopen the HP Smart app and begin setup again.
    • The app should detect the printer and prompt for a new PIN or allow setup without one.

4. Access Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • If the printer is connected to your network:
    • Find its IP address via your router or printer display.
    • Enter the IP address in a browser to open the Embedded Web Server.
    • Navigate to Settings > Security > Administrator Settings to view or reset the PIN.

You can find official guidance on PIN setup and troubleshooting in HP’s Secure PIN Setup Guide.

I truly regret the disruption this has caused—especially when you're following the setup steps carefully and the printer isn’t cooperating.

Let me know how far you get with these steps, and I’ll guide you further if needed. You deserve a smooth and secure setup experience.
