Hi @tomjh

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That message—“firmware can improve…”—usually means your HP 8535 printer is stuck mid-update or the firmware prompt didn’t complete properly.

Let’s get it back to printing like a champ:

1. Restart the Printer

  • Power off the printer completely.
  • Unplug it from the wall for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. Sometimes a full power cycle clears the stuck message.

2. Check for Firmware Update via HP Smart or EWS

  • Open the HP Smart app or go to the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by typing its IP address into a browser.
  • Navigate to Settings > Printer Updates > Firmware Updates.
  • If an update is available, install it. If it says “up to date,” move to the next step.

3. Disable Automatic Firmware Updates Temporarily

  • On the printer’s control panel:
    • Tap Setup (gear icon) > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
    • Select Printer Update Options > Do not check.
  • This prevents the printer from repeatedly trying to update and getting stuck.

4. Restore Factory Defaults (if needed)

If the update option is locked or the message won’t go away:

  • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Confirm and let the printer restart.

Manual Firmware Update via USB

If nothing else works:

  • Download the latest firmware from the HP Software & Driver Downloads.
  • Copy it to a USB drive (root folder).
  • Plug the USB into the printer’s USB host port.
  • Wait for the “Update Printer” icon to appear and follow the on-screen instructions.

Let me know how it pans out!!
