HP DeskJet Plus 4110 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I own a HP DeskJet Plus 4110, and after moving, it won’t connect to the router (Telekom Speedport Smart 4; probably the most popular router in Germany).

Wi-Fi Setup worked without any problems with an earlier Speedport (model 3) using HP Smart. With the new router (up-to-date firmware, absolutely no changes from Telekom factory configuration), it fails at the “Getting the IP address” step. “Receiving the printer address…” times out after about 20 seconds (“Cannot connect the printer to Wi-Fi”).

I have restarted both router and printer multiple times and tried HP Smart both from an iPhone and an iMac connected to this network, following the instructions.

There’s absolutely nothing exotic about this setup. Does anyone have an idea what could be done here?

Thank you.

Hello Rachel,

thank you for your recommendations.

– DHCP was active, so this wasn’t the issue.

– Resetting the router to factory settings didn’t help.

— Assign a static IP Address wasn’t possible, as I can’t access the printer via HP Smart when it’s not’t connected to Wi-Fi (catch 22), and the DeskJet Plus 4120 has no on-device control panel that would allow me to set an IP.

I finally found a solution in a Telekom support forum, which I’m poating here for the next guy who gets stuck with that particular setup: WPA for the SpeedPort router has to be changed from WPA2/3 to WPA2 only. This fixed the issue, and HP Smart would complete setup.

Hi @Martin_R,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue where the printer struggles to obtain an IP address from the new router. Here are several steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Check DHCP Settings on the Router: Ensure that the DHCP server is enabled on your Telekom Speedport Smart 4 router. This setting is crucial because it assigns IP addresses to devices on your network. Since the issue arises at the "Getting the IP address" step, confirming DHCP settings would be a logical first step.

Reset Router to Factory Settings: Although you mentioned there were no changes from the factory configuration, it might help to reset the router to its factory settings once more, especially if an unknown setting might be affecting connectivity.

Assign a Static IP Address: If DHCP settings seem normal but the issue persists, consider setting a static IP address for the printer. You can do this through the printer’s control panel or HP Smart software by manually entering an IP address that is within your network’s range but outside the DHCP auto-assignment pool to avoid conflicts.

Update Printer Firmware: Ensure your printer firmware is up to date. You can check for firmware updates on the HP website or through the HP Smart software.

Change Wireless Channel: Sometimes, the wireless channel can be congested, especially if there are many networks nearby. Changing the wireless channel on your router can reduce interference and improve connectivity.

Use a Different Connection Method: As a temporary workaround, consider using a USB connection or setting up Wi-Fi Direct from the printer. This can help isolate the problem, whether it's specifically with the router's Wi-Fi or a broader issue with the printer.

Check for Interference: Ensure there are no physical obstructions or electronic devices that could be causing interference near the router or printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
