I got this little inkjet to replace one that died for an old accounting system; but even though the CD has a Win XP driver, I get an error when installing that says: "A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file D:\D1110x86.cab has an invalid digital signature. This may indicated that the cabinet file is corrupt." I downloaded the setup files from the HP website, with the same result. This computer had never been online, and I had read that the installation needed to compare with the mothership to confirm the install, so went to the trouble of finding a network card for this XP machine (know how difficult that is??), then more difficulty actually getting it online. After months of trying, I finally succeeded this morning, but it made no difference (!!!!). WHY CAN'T I GET THIS PRINTER TO WORK WITH THIS MACHINE? Any thoughts?

Thoughts...

Caveat:  I have not seen an XP machine for a (very) long time.  Everyting below is, at best, speculation.

Computers "never on the Internet" might not provide the full set of updates and system libraries necessary to support device software.  I do understand that XP has been unsupported for years - XP updates (through, what, service pack 3?) may be available with a bit of searching.  In fact, that might be what you meant (Mothership reference).

1.  Before installing the Full Feature Software, disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer.  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (toward the end of the procedure).

2.  Can you install the Basic Drivers (as opposed to the Full Feature Software)?

Honestly, I realize this is not what you want - it might be a step forward if at least the "basic" drivers install.

2A.  Add a printer procedure - Add Windows drivers for the printer.   If it works, adding the Windows Drivers for the printer series provides basic print function.  Not fancy - but this sometimes works when other methods fall in the dirt.

At least in my case, having just searched for the printer series, I did have to click the little Windows Update box to refresh the printer list.  The process to repopulate the printer list takes anywhere from a very reasonable 30 seconds to two minutes (or even longer).  Shudder.

You are looking for HP Deskjet 1110 series

If the procedure works, then (without any expectations), you could try installing the Full Feature or Basic drivers again.

3.  What flavor is your XP?  32bit or 64bit?  HP Drivers support the 32 bit version of XP.

XP 32bit is supported.

XP 64bit is not supported.

Hi DF, Thanks for the suggestions. Here's the answers:

The printer is not connected at this time.

The "Basic Drivers" won't install...same error message.

Tried adding a printer, then changing the drivers, but it's looking for a .inf file rather than a .dll file.

I can't get Internet Explorer to go anywhere but Bing and one other site. I think this is because this version of IE (6) came with the original install. Anything I download has to be with my laptop (running Win7), and most sites automatically detect the Win version and want to give me Win7 drivers/software rather than XP. Some don't even offer XP anymore. I think IE6 is not playing well with https websites, which is pretty much everything now. So the Windows Update idea won't work.

This version of XP (and the machine) is 32bit.

If Firefox still supports XP, you could try using that browser.

Not sure if Chrome will go back that far, either.

If IE is not working, almost any other browser will likely be "better".

I don't have "Bing" allowed / connected to anything.

IE is something I bring up on rare occasions.   Just checked, IE still works on my Windows 10 Pro V1809 machine.  That is about as much as can be helpful - our "browsing" experience (for example, what IE can open) is not going to be similar enough to make any difference to you.

Hi,

As your say the computer is not online, is it updated with service pack 3?

The printer is supported on Windows XP Service Pack 3 and not with any earlier Windows XP version:

Hope that may help,

Shlomi

OK, I found an old copy of XP SP3 in my old disks and installed the upgrade. Also, downloaded and installed DotNet framework v. 4, which I understand is the last supported version for XP. Then, tried to install the printer again, but no success. I don't get the same error message, but the install just goes off into lala land and never completes. I give up. I'll just use a Canon printer instead of this HP.

So, indeed, Service Pack 3 is the "latest" (first post).  I had no idea whether it would be helpful.  I would have thought, "yes" and then have been wrong for the guesswork.

It is apparent the "something" in your File System is not (in some way) compatible with the printer's requirement(s).

I do not blame you for moving on - your persistence to have arrived this far is to be admired.

There may indeed be "an answer" - perhaps @ShlomiL has another idea or another member may chime in.  There are still lots of XP users in the world, after all.
