About 10 days ago, my Deskjet 2540 printer was not printingfirst thing morning, after left sleeping all night. Linked wirelessly to a Samsung RV520 laptop, it responded neither to USB or wireless signals, and over the next week as I experimented, I noted some changes to its software.
As long as I could reach the printer maintenance window, a test page printed fine, but nothing from apps like MS Word would.
Over this period, Print & Scan Doctor has found no faults, the desktop printer icon has gone, software and driver have been uninstalled, downloaded fresh and re-installed twice, HP Smart has appeared but I don't recall installing it. The printer's Wifi lamp blinked continually for the week.
Today, unplugging and unpowering laptop and printer for a few minutes, for about the tenth time, I find the printer working wireless and USB. Operation is normal, but my familiar controls are gone. The user interface is different, access to scan and maintenance is through HP Smart, the User Guide only covers Windows 8 and earlier.
I'll cope, but am I missing some documentation?
Now resolved locally in Australia. Thanks all.

Hi @Geoffoh,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.
I reviewed your post and I understand that you are facing issues printing on your computer.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.
- When was the last time the computer was working fine?
- Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?
Meanwhile, is the printer connected to the network? Check the wireless light. If the light is steady blue, then the printer is connected to the network. If the light is flashing, then the printer is not connected to the network. Go to Setup - Network - Wireless setup wizard to connect the printer to the network.
Then follow the below steps to do a root uninstall and reinstall the printer.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the PC
14.) Download and install the printer software from the below link.
15.) Connect the USB cable ONLY when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Hey, Fossette, huge thanks for your help. Beginning at the end of the story, I perceive our printer problems and annoyances are resolved.
To your queries - compute and printer worked fine a day or two either side of Jan 6; and as to other changes, currently trying a series of video capture and edit software - Prism, Debut, Clipgrab, others, in the last fortnight, installed new external disk burner last week, doubt all their relevance, but you asked. Blue light has flashed continually last week, could not find why, other devices on the same network (TVs) were performing, network printing occasionally worked, now OK.
In case they matter to you, here are some process details. Steps are the steps in your email.
- Step 2: Programs & Features did not list 2540: nearest entry was 2540 Series help – so removed it.
- Step 5 Devices & Printers listed both wired (listed to be offline, but why?) and network – both removed.
- Step 9 Removed Driver, but Apply stayed greyed; also removed Series (Class Driver) but Apply still greyed; closed window anyway and restarted.
- Step 15 Screen instructing the USB connection did not show a “Next” option – no matter what. Concluded I may have a dud USB cable, so backed up and created the network link with no difficulty.
Now have desktop access to Scan & Maintenance restored. I’m home!
