@musicmanfz, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding ADF Scanning Issues on HP DeskJet 4100 Series Printers!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
If you're unable to scan using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on your HP DeskJet 4100 series printer and are required to manually scan each page, here are some steps to resolve the issue:
Check ADF Connection and Setup
- Ensure that the ADF cover is properly closed and there are no obstructions.
- Verify that the ADF is securely connected to the printer.
Clean the ADF Rollers
- Turn off and unplug the printer.
- Open the ADF and remove any paper or debris.
- Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and clean the rollers and separator pad.
- Allow the rollers to dry completely before closing the ADF cover.
Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the printer and the power source.
- Wait for 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet and reconnect it to the printer.
- Turn on the printer to complete the reset.
Update or Reinstall Printer Software
- Ensure that you have the latest version of the HP Smart app.
- Go to 123.hp.com/setup and download HP Easy Start to install the full feature software and driver.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall or update the printer drivers.
Check for Firmware Updates
- Go to the printer's control panel and navigate to the settings.
- Check for firmware updates and install them if available.
Scanner Settings in HP Smart App
- Open the HP Smart app.
- Go to the scanning options and ensure that the ADF is selected as the source.
- Follow the instructions in the app to scan using the ADF.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi @musicmanfz,
Thank you for the response.
Since @zoey7886 is not available at the moment, I'll be assisting you further.
Here's what you can try next:
Reset HP Smart and re-add printer.
Uninstall HP Smart from your PC or Mac.
Reboot your system.
Reinstall the latest version from the official HP Smart download page.
Open HP Smart → Re-add your printer → Tap on Scan → See if "Source: Document Feeder" appears now.
Install Full Feature Software (Again)
Sometimes HP Smart alone doesn't include scanning extensions. So:
Go to 123.hp.com
Download the full package for your model.
During install, enable "Scan Extended Features" if prompted.
Try HP Print & Scan Doctor (Windows Only)
Download HP Print & Scan Doctor
Run it → Choose your printer → Let it repair any scan issues.
Restart HP Smart → Check for “ADF” source.
I hope this helps.
