Deskjet 5550
macOS 10.12 Sierra

When I installed macOS 10.13 High Sierra, My Deskjet 5550 quit working.

I'd been using HPIJS with the previous system, but that no longer works. Downloaded hplip-3.17.10 from https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/, but I'm not able to make hide nor hair of the package.

No error message; the printer apparently doesn't receive any data. But the computer sees the printer and seems to think the job was sent successfully.

Any help getting the printer working again. would be appreciated.

Hi Howard,

The HP Deskjet 5550 is not supported on any of the latest Mac OS versions.

HPLIP is designed for Linux, it was not designed for Mac and were never tested on a such by HP...

You may try the 3rd party GutenPrint driver which list the 5550 pritner as supported.

You may download and install GutenPrint below:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/gutenprint-5.2/5.2.13-pre1/gutenprint-5.2.13-pre1.d...

Once installing power on and connect the printer, from Printer & Scanners select the printer and click the Use drop-down menu.

Manually select the driver by selecting Deskjet 5550 by GutenPrint / Gimp.

For further details you may visit below link:

Hope that helps,

Thanks, Shlomil. I didn't realize that the Linux solutions were not also usable for Mac.

I'll try Gutenprint again. Perhaps a current version will work with High Sierra, but its then-current iteration had stopped working with the Deskjet 5550 several versions of macOS back. That's when HPIJS came to the rescue.

I appreciate your taking the time to respond with a couple possibly useful links.

EDIT: Gutenprint drivers work. Thanks for pointing me that way!
