Hi @TomAllan,
I'd like to help!
I understand you are looking to find the Printer assistant icon for your printer.
To have the printer assistant on the desktop screen the full-featured drivers must be installed.
You could go to start and type in your printer name to find the printer assistant.
If you have not installed the drivers, you may do so from here
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I’m looking to find the icon for the Windows desktop for my printer, HP Colour Laser MFP 179fnw and not for the HP Support Assistant. Where can I get my printer icon. I recently upgraded to this new printer from the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 and this did provide a desktop icon that allowed me to manage my printer and it’s various functions. I’m looking for the same for my new printer.

The Printer Assistant icon will show up only when the full-featured drivers were installed.
Let's try and uninstall the previous software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature software for this printer.
--->In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
--->Select your HP printer.
--->Select Uninstall.
--->In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
--->In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
--->Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
--->Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
--->Click on the Drivers tab.
--->Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.
--->Select OK.
--->Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
--->Close Devices and Printers.
And then reinstall the printer full-featured drivers from the software and drivers page
Hope this helps!
