OK, It would seem you have a corrupted installation that is interfering with upgrading.

You will need to uninstall the Printer completely and reinstall it.

To do this...

Download Revo Uninstaller free edition... https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Run Revo and select the HP printer and anything else related HP software it had installed.

You need to use the Advance Mode when it asks. Then click the Scan button after the uninstaller part finishes.

Click on Select All and then Delete. If it shows another selection of files to select after this, then select all and delete them too.

Close Revo.

Type Control Panel in the Cortana Search Bar and select it from the pop up menu.

If the printer is showing in Printers, delete it and any other releated devices.

Next, type Device Manager in the Cortana Search Bar and open it.

In the Device Manager, go to the View tab and enable Show Hidden Devices.

Look for Printers in the list. IF its there, expand it and delete any HP printer entries.

Do the same if there is a category for Imaging Devices.

Now press the windows key + r key. Type printui.exe /s and press enter.

In the new window that opens, go to Drivers tab.  Remove any entry for HP printers if you find them.

Press the windows key + r key again and type c:/programdata

Look for a Hewlett Packard folder and remove any printer related folders & files.

Restart the PC.

Run the printer installer again.

Let me know the results.

Hello @Cascabel

Im not sure what has happened on your machine, but you could simply delete the desktop shortcut and place another one on there.

To get another shortcut to the HP Printer Assistant interface, you will find the original exe in the Programs folder.

The path to the folder will probably be something like this...

C:\Program Files\HP\HP Officejet 5740\Bin

Then look for a file thats named HP Officejet 5740.exe

Right click on it and choose    Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).

You should now have the correct desktop icon for the printers control interface.

Let me know if you need further help.

I cannot find the folder as mentioned in your instructions.   Perhaps more info would be helpful !!  Can it be found on the original  installation disc  ?

Just to be clear, there is no longer a working shortcut for it listed in the Windows Start button as well, correct?

If not, perhaps you would do best to simply reinstall the software. Then your shorcuts should reappear. I dont know what you have on the installation disk.

This is the latest update...

OJ5740_Full_WebPack_40.11.1135.exe

Yes, that is correct.   Other than that everything is fine.

If you cannot find the exe file path I posted, reinstalling wont hurt anything and wont take long. If you have not updated, this will do that also.

You simply download the file and run it. No uninstalling anything is necessary.

It will not do the installation.   Should I just  run the original installation disc  to fix everything ?

In what way will it not work?

You mean the installation wont start, or is there an error that shows up?

I get an error that "The device was unable to be installed over the network"
