Laserjet M1212nf MFP
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Most recent HP printers have a setting to disable the requirement to only use genuine HP toner cartridges.  This is needed as it is a legal requirement. But my printer is 10 years old and I cannot find a way to do this on my Laserjet M1212nf MFP.  I had to download the new driver package when I got a new Win 10 PC but it also did a firmware upgrade on the printer and now I cannot use my printer because it requires a genuine cartridge. Does anyone know how HP meets its legal obligation not to disable my printer for not having a genuine cartridge.  Is there anyway I can use my printer without having a HP cartridge? (I previously always used genuine cartridges but once the printer got old I did not see the point really).  The printer now just loops endlessly on the initialization step on turning on and others have confirmed that this is fixable by putting in a genuine cartridge but I don't have one to confirm it.

Welcome to the HP support community.

HP printers are designed to work with original HP ink and toner cartridges. As is standard in the printing business, HP printers use a process to authenticate cartridges. In certain HP printers, this authentication process includes dynamic security measures. Dynamic security relies on the printer’s ability to communicate with the security chips or electronic circuitry on the cartridges. HP uses dynamic security measures to protect the quality of our customer experience, maintain the integrity of our printing systems, and protect our intellectual property.

My problem is that when I turn on the printer it never gets past initialising.  The printer was working on my previous PC running Windows 10 but when I got a new PC I had to download a new driver from HP as Windows did not have a driver and this HP full package also updated the firmware in the printer.  Now the printer loops on initialising and never complete the startup. Can you suggest what might be causing this and how I can get the printer to start. I read elsewhere that this failure to get past initialising could be caused by having a non-genuine HP toner cartridge but It could be something else.  The HP full driver package install went well and terminated normally and included a firmware update of the printer.
