DeskJet 842C
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought a new tower for my mentally challenged son.  He is not using the internet, but does like to create word docs and excel docs and print.  He has a DeskJet 842C printer which serves him well.  Now I see the printer is discontinued.  Is there a way to install the printer?  I can't find the driver on the HP website.

Hi:

See if this works...

Download and save, but do not run the 2nd driver on the list at the link below (that is the 64 bit file).

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=%20DeskJet%20842C

Download and install this free file utility.  The 2nd link at the top of the page is for 64 bit.

http://www.7-zip.org/

After you install 7-Zip right click on the printer driver file you downloaded and saved.

Have 7-Zip Extract to:  and let it extract the file to its long folder name.

Once that is done, go through the normal steps to manually add a printer in W10.

This link may be of help if you are unfamiliar with the process.  Read the info for adding a local printer, steps 1-5.

When you get to the part where you are asked to install the driver, click on Have Disk and browse to the driver folder 7-Zip created>prnhp001, and select the HP DeskJet 840C/841C/842C/843C printer from the list, and the driver should install.
