How far away does the wireless printer have to be from the wireless router. Long story I have to move equipment  and it will mean between the printer and router will be about 6 inches - will this affect the printer operation?

Too close is as bad as too far away.

Keep printer and router separated by at least three feet (about 1 meter).

"Too far" depends on the router - a robust router with four antennas is going to provide better coverage (and distance) than would a smaller, weaker device.
