Can’t turn printer off.  Control panel shows only the HP logo and a progress bar.

Most of HP's connection instructions usually advise against using a surge protector and the user guide makes no mention of using one. It is more of an issue with laser printers where the high inrush current draw works against the design parameters of a surge protector and can actually lead to more issues. If you cannot turn the device off via the power switch you will need to remove the power cord. Before reinserting the power, hold the power switch in for ten seconds and then release the power button. Now reattach the power cord and try to power on the printer.
