Does this Print and Scan Doctor work with Windows 7? I need to check the ink levels and the built-in Win driver set up doesn't install any other software, only the basic printer driver.

I printed a self-test page from the printer settings, but it doesn't show ink levels either (unlike what's claimed in the documentation).

Are there any other workarounds?

Thank you.

It's the printer that is not supported - this product introduced in 2002

The Print and Scan Doctor cannot find any useful information to use / present.

Yes...Interestingly, the Software and Drivers page does still include information on using Windows 10 print drivers for basic print function.

Windows drivers do not include any of the Toolbox functions that would have been available (many) years past when HP driver software was still available.  The Toolbox (part of the printer software) would have been the source for checking ink levels, for example.

Looks like the printer software was supported in XP - not helpful unless you have an old XP box sitting around that still works or you can get the XP printer software to install in compatibility mode.  ??

Yes, this is a very old printer, and I'm glad it still works. Kudos to HP.

I'm using the printer with no problem on Win 7, other than I cannot see the ink levels.

The compatibility mode is interesting. I'll have to look into that.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention that I have two exe files from HP called dj4511 which contain the hpsfx32 driver. I got these 6 years ago. However, I cannot find any info on that driver anywhere, including here.

Should I uninstall the current driver and try this one? The thing is, how do I uninstall with the built-in setup?

OK, sounds like something to try...

Windows print drivers do not have to be removed.

If you open the printer's Drivers and Software  > Windows > Windows XP (32bit)

you will find two similar files - these, of course, are for Windows XP.

The point is that this is as much as I know about the files you have.  The  name of the executable is (about) the same as those still available - the strong likelihood is that your executable files are indeed software installation kits.

So - agreement of sorts.  Smiling.

The following is relevant for Windows 10 - it is likely the same (or similar) for Windows 7...

Before making any changes to your system, always create a Restore Point!

(How to) Create Restore Point

Stop all programs:  Browsers, games, Applications, etc.

Control Panel > icon view > System > System Protection

Click (Highlight) your main disk (C) > Select Create a Restore Point

OR

(As available)

Create a restore point now for the drives that have system protection turned on

Create

Install software - Standard

  • Open File Explorer Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

OR

Installation - Optional / Extras

** Install - Optional - For Windows 10  7 Users – Compatibility Mode **

If you have been having trouble getting the printer software to fully install (Printer Assistant is functional and Scanning works), consider using Compatibility.  Note that this method only fixes “one type” of difficulty; installing this way may – or may not – make the necessary difference.

Right-Click on the downloaded installation file > Properties > Compatibility

Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for"

Select Windows 8  Windows 7 (or the closest you can find)

Click Apply and OK to close the Properties menu

Right-Click on the installation file and select to Run as Administrator
