After scanning to a network folder on MacOS, I get "You do not have permission to open ...". I have Everyone set to Read-Write permissions for the folder in "Sharing" Settings. How can I get past this error?  Thanks for any info.

Hi @jmpfw,

I'd like to help!

I understand you are receiving a "You do not have permission to open" error.

To assist better-

Are you able to make regular scans?

Does the error come up only when accessing the scan to the network folder?

Could you share the full error?

Keep me posted.

Regular scans work fine.  I followed the setup directions here:  https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03953940 .  The error is only when accessing scans in the folder.  For a file names "scan0001.pdf", the full error is "You do not have permission to open the document "scan0001.pdf".  Contact your computer or network administrator for assistance.  OK".  I am logged on with an Admin ID.  In "Get Info" for the folder, Sharing & Permissions shows Read & Write access for me and everyone.  But the individual scan files, Sharing & Permissions shows Read & Write access for hpm281scanner (the ID for the scanner) and No Access for everyone.  If I try to change the access for everyone to Read & Write, I get the message "The operation can't be completed because you don't have the necessary permission.  OK".

Thank you for getting back to me.

Could you share an image of the error?

While you respond to that, make sure you are logged in as an admin.

Go to System Preferences>Users & Groups and make sure under the current user you are logged in as an Admin user.

Let me know!

Here are screenshots of my User settings showing "Admin" and the error.

Try the below steps to resolve the issue-

  1. Quit any apps that are open.
  2. From the menu bar in the Finder, choose to Go > Go to Folder.
  3. Type /Library/Image Capture/Devices, then press Return.
  4. In the window that opens, double-click the app named in the error message. It's the name of your scanner driver. Nothing should happen when you open it.
  5. Close the window and open the app you were using to scan. A new scan should proceed normally. If you later choose to scan from a different app and get the same error, repeat these steps.

Hope this helps!

This doesn't apply to my.  "In the window that opens, double-click the app named in the error message."  As you can see in my posted error message, there is no app named there.  I am trying to use the "Scan to Network Folder" feature of my HP printer; I am not scanning from an app.

I can see how to change the existing permissions of previous scans, but not how to get new scans to inherit the permissions of the folder.  I think this is more a question for Apple Support so I am moving this question over there.
