HP 4524
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

H4524 printer.

1. Until recently I could print double sided without any manual feed.

2. I purchased a new HP laptop with the latest Windows 10 (64-bit) and did the connections to the printer:  Prior to this latest connection the printing has functioned satisfactorily with real double-sided print on both sides performed by the printer.  On the old laptop I had Windows 10 as the operative system.

3. When I attempt to print now (and I do want it to be double -sided) the printer set-up (preferences) appears  down to the right states double-sided manual print.  I've never seen this previously.   "Manual print"?
 4. Page One is printed along with an empty page. When I feed in the empty page into the printer as instructed on printer dialogue screen on the laptop, the page 2 is printed.  BUT I end up with two pages or four pages if the document has four pages.  This is not 2-sided print and is contrary to the stated "marketing" on the carton when I bought the printer.  States clearly 2-sided print.  And I've always had proper two-sided print until the new HP laptop.?  I suspect the problem can be traced to Windows 10 and maybe a driver for HP,  but I don't know?

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions.  I've used some time and wasted paper and ink trying to sort it out.  The cost of HP ink is rather prohibitive.

Thanks for your reply, Dragon Fur.
I am sorry but it still does not work even after trying the solutions you have listed.  I had tried  most of them before you replied.  There just seems to be something missing as to real duplex printing (automatic).  I find it hard to accept that I have to feed the blank page manually back into the printer to have it printed as page 2.  I am missing the automatic duplex printing.

Something seems to be missing and I suspect it might be traced back to Windows 10?  It worked previously with my Samsung PC (which has been replaced by a new HP laptop) and Windows 10.  And it worked in early February with the Envy 4524 printer. It does not work now though with the new HP laptop (and Windows 10).

As ink is rather expensive from HP,  I believe i will just have to wait for some solution down the road. I am not prepared to buy a new printer yet.  Disappointing when a new HP laptop and a HP printer do not work together to give the result I have expected.

You are welcome.

OK - assuming from your comments that you are using the Envy 4524

Windows 10 does changes pretty much all the time - updates can interfere with printer software and other programs on the computer.  It is not "bad" Windows - it is a result of everything being so intertwined and interdependent - stuff breaks sometimes.

If something is missing, actually not there at all, it is perhaps something

  • Indeed lost, broken, or changed in the zillions of little instructions necessary for the printer software,
  • The Full Feature Software  is not (was never?) fully installed,
  • The printer software needs to be removed and reinstalled.

If you believe the error is due to a Windows 10 Update,

If you have not done so,

  • Completely uninstall the printer software, including any of the entries for the printer in your user account in AppData.
  • Restart the computer and log in
  • Download-save-install a fresh copy of the software.

Reminder

  • HP Smart for Windows is an application - it is found in Settings > Apps > Apps and Features
  • Manage / uninstall HP Smart for Windows in Apps and Features
  • There is unlikely any "HP Smart printer software bits" from the application in your AppData folder.

Clear HP Printer mention in AppData\Local\HP

Open File Explorer > Navigate to C:\Users\YourAccount\AppData\Local\HP

Remove / Delete any folder named for the printer you wish to remove

There are choices for printer software for Windows 10

HP Smart for Windows

HP Smart is an application available from the Windows Store.

Learn how to use HP Smart on your Windows 10 computer.

Open the Software and Drivers Support Website for your printer > Check the Box Get the App

OR

NOTE:  Website includes the HP Smart software for Windows and Mobile devices, plus an FAQ section to assist with questions / issues

and the Full Feature Software

HP ENVY 4520 series Print and Scan Driver and Accessories

After the software is installed, Restart the printer and log in.

NOTES:

You can have both HP Smart and the Full Feature Software installed on the computer.

Just remember they are managed differently and live in different parts of the OS.
