the copy function on the printer works from the feed tray on the top.

Which means the hardware is working fine. I would then recommend you to do this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account-in-windows-...

The printer itself is "working" fine, but it's completely useless if my PC can't communicate with it properly.  Windows sees the OfficeJet Pro 9010 object and lists it in the Printers and Scanners section, but only lets me manage it as a scanner.   There's no option to set it as a default printer, and if i try to print a document, it won't appear in the list of available printers. There's clearly a problem with the printer driver, but when I try to run the HP software packages that install the drivers, they can't detect the printer at all and won't run.

You DO realize, the software should do this ITSELF, right, and this is testament to your shoddy driver programming?

This is how bad HP software has gotten.

I have a networked printer.  To get it working at ALL, I had to download the ridiculously large (300+ MB for a PRINTER DRIVER!!!) driver, then it wouldn't detect the networked printer unless I entered the IP manually.  Ok.

Fast forward a few months, and I need to SCAN something from my networked HP.  Failed to communicate with scanner.  Ugh.  Checked for software update.  Sure enough.  Shoddily programmed software needs to be updated often, I would imagine.  So I download the latest driver package.  How well does it work?

Even though the printer is connected to the network...and listed in "available devices"...AND I can send print jobs to it NO PROBLEM...the NEW software, even after it's told "It's a wired printer", and even with the same printer already connected and able to print using the OLD driver, it STILL can't see the existing printer on the network which is STILL PRINTING.

Now?  I've uninstalled all the old software (including the bloatware) from the old software package and am trying a re-install with the latest software.  What do I get?  HP Easy Start "Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

"Checking your software needs..."

Pretty much now for eternity.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO CHECK MY SOFTWARE NEEDS?!?!  YOU DO NOT NEED TO "CHECK SOFTWARE NEEDS" FOR A DRIVER INSTALLATION!!!!!  YOU NEED TO ADD A FEW .DLL FILES AND REGISTER THEM.  THIS DOES NOT NECESSITATE A CONVOLUTED "Checking your software needs".  JUST INSTALL THE DRIVER FILES.

I recommend NOBODY purchase HP printers until they perform a TOP TO BOTTOM RE-BUILD OF THEIR DRIVER SOFTWARE SYSTEM.

1.  Driver software for a printer should NEVER be over 100 MB, ITS A DRIVER.  You can write a driver file with KILOBYTES.  300+ megabyte driver files is YOU NOT KNOWING HOW TO CODE SOFTWARE.

Fix your software.  Or stop selling printers.  Get coders that know what the term "EFFICIENT CODING" means.

2. Learn how to code for a networked printer.  There is NO REASON I should have to enter IP addresses MANUALLY.  Ever heard of DHCP?  How come I can easily communicate with every device on my network, but your SOFTWARE CAN'T?!?

And re: the HP Smart crapola?  Having to SIGN IN to SCAN?!?  Man...Epson, Brother, and Canon looking better all the time.

It's a shame because in my experience HP does have the best printers, but this software issue is inexcusable.  I'm going to have to throw away a $200 printer because the useless software doesn't detect it, and if it comes to that, i definitely will not be replacing it with another HP printer.

What i don't understand is why there is no option to manually install the printer driver or the printer controller driver or whatever manually instead of forcing it through the software.  Even if the software doesn't detect the printer, it should still allow you to proceed with driver installation.
