Envy Photo 7800
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Replaced broken Photosmart 7520 with a new Costco Envy Photo 7800. I download the new driver but when try to open it by double clicking I get "Safari can’t open the file." message, which means I can't install the driver. I've tried many things to no avail and about to return the printer to Costco. Gotta say I'm really frustrated with HP. Everything on their website circles back to the beginning without providing any real help. Is there a setting in my security I need to change?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

It's a pleasure assisting you in finding answers to your technical queries.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

How is the printer connected?

Make sure the printer and Mac are connected to the same network.

Make sure your network is working correctly and that the printer is ready for the network setup.

If you are using a wireless router, check your router's documentation or support site to make sure it meets the following requirements:

Check the router band: Many routers can operate in both 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz frequency bands, but not all HP printers support both bands. Make sure the 2.4 GHz router band is enabled and broadcasting. If the router broadcasts separate network names (SSIDs) for each band, connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz band SSID.

Bonjour support: HP recommends routers that support Bonjour, Apple's network discovery software. Connecting with Bonjour is the best way to find the printer and support wireless printing.

update the printer firmware and Mac software:

Update printer firmware

Update software on Mac

If the printer is connected to the network follow the below step.

Delete the existing print queue and add the printer

Remove the printer queue from the list of printers, and then add it again. Doing so creates a new printing session.

  1. Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet.

  2. In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button  to delete it.

  3. Click the Add button .

  4. Find and select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

    NOTE:

If your printer does not display in the list, make sure the printer is connected, turned on, has power, and is ready to print.

  5. Click Print Using or Use.

  6. Select the name of your printer (if available) or AirPrint.

Your new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an Idle status .

  7. Try printing again.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Thank you. I completed the steps you outlined above, other than updating the driver on the Mac, (since the problem I am having is installing the driver), and the the printer actually works on both the MacBook Air and our late 2011 MacBook Pro without the driver!

I forgot to mention earlier that I am able print from our iPad using the HP Smart App.

So, it seems like it is possible to print from our MacBooks without them needing to have a driver. Is that true?

Further, it seems as though our two MacBooks simply cannot open the driver zip files from your website. The file seems as though it downloads fine to the Downloads folder but the file has a note that it "Cannot move the file". When I double click a popup says "Safari can't open the file". "HP Easy Start can't open the file because the file is still being downloaded." Even after 2-3 days, the file still is "being downloaded." Are our MacBooks in need of software to properly "unzip" the driver?

It looks like you were interacting with @Raj1788, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.

Envy Photo 7800 printer is AirPrint compatible and it doesn't require any separate driver to print from Apple devices. However, if you would like to use the additional HP Printer Essential software then you may download and install them from here.

Thank you for the information that we don't really need a driver. In all the time I spent trying to figure out my print problem I didn't run across anything that said that. I am happy to know that! Thanks.

I did try to download the file Senan included and install it I get the same message: "Safari can't open the file hp-printer_essentials_D-5_10_.pkg because the file is still being downloaded." Still don't understand what that is about. If you have any ideas, I would appreciate hearing them. Thanks. ...
