Hi @SnapshotJohnsto,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Scanjet 5530 printer is not being recognized properly by your Windows 11 laptop, it's possible that you need to install the correct driver for it to function correctly. Here are steps you can take to try and resolve the issue.
Windows Update: First, make sure your Windows 11 system is up to date. Sometimes, Windows Update can automatically detect and install drivers for your devices.
HP Support Website: Visit the HP support website and search for the drivers for your specific printer model. You can usually find drivers under the "Support" or "Downloads" section of the website. Download and install the drivers compatible with Windows 11.
Device Manager: You can also try to manually install the drivers through Device Manager. Here’s how:
- Right-click on the Start menu and select "Device Manager".
- Look for your unidentified device (your HP Scanjet 5530 printer) in the list. It might be listed under "Other devices" or "Imaging devices".
- Right-click on the device and select "Update driver".
- Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software" and let Windows search for the appropriate driver online. If it doesn't find one, you can select "Browse my computer for driver software" and navigate to the folder where you downloaded the driver from the HP website.
Compatibility Mode: If you have downloaded a driver but it's not installing properly, you can try running the installer in compatibility mode. Right-click on the driver installer file, select "Properties", go to the "Compatibility" tab, check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:", and select an earlier version of Windows such as Windows 10. Then, try running the installer again.
HP Printer Assistant: If HP provides a specific software suite for your printer model (such as HP Printer Assistant), you can try installing it. Sometimes, these software packages include drivers as well as additional tools for managing your printer.
By following these steps, you should hopefully be able to install the correct driver for your HP Scanjet 5530 printer on your Windows 11 laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for the rapid response. I tried several solution but wasn't able to get up and running'. I guess an old printer will not be recognized with an updated computer. I am moving away from being frustrated to a new printer. Lesson learned: store installation disc in a safe place.
