Hi @ConnorHealy ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the issue you're facing with the duplex unit on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw may be due to a misconfiguration in the printer settings or driver. Here are steps to help enable and install the duplex printing feature:
Verify Printer Driver Settings:
- Open Control Panel on your computer, and go to Devices and Printers.
- Locate your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw, right-click on it, and select Printer Properties (not just "Properties").
- Go to the Device Settings tab.
- Look for the option labeled Duplex Unit (for 2-Sided Printing) and make sure it is set to Installed. If it’s set to “Not Installed,” change it to Installed.
- Click Apply and OK to save your settings.
Update or Reinstall Printer Driver:
- Sometimes, an outdated or incorrect driver can prevent features like duplex printing from being recognized. Go to HP’s official website and download the latest full-feature driver for your printer.
- Uninstall the current driver from Devices and Printers by right-clicking your printer and selecting Remove device.
- Restart your computer, then install the latest driver you downloaded and ensure the duplex unit is set to “Installed” in the settings as described in Step 1.
Enable Duplex Printing in Printer Preferences:
- After configuring the duplex unit, try printing a document to see if the option for 2-Sided Printing appears.
- Go to Printer Preferences from any print dialog, look for the Print on Both Sides option, and set it to Automatically if available.
Check Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure your printer firmware is up to date by checking on the HP support website. New firmware updates may fix issues related to duplexing and other settings.
