The printer driver name appeared to change during an update some months ago, and now reads Scan Only - HP ENVY 6200 series [F91A20] - DO NOT DELETE docu.......

Some functionality was lost and although still a great printer (yes - it does more than scan), I am loath to attempt getting the correct model-specific driver because of the message.

Any advice would be gratefully received

Welcome to the HP Community --

As I recall, the old (since banished) Print and Scan Doctor would create this "do not delete" driver to fix what were presumed to be connection or driver issues.

You can certainly delete / uninstall that "Do not delete" driver from Programs and Features.

Regardless of the intimidating name, it's just printer software.

What about?

The Print and Scan Doctor -- if you still have it installed -- should be removed.

The HP Print and Scan Doctor should be removed.

Preparation

Ideally you are using a static / manual IP address to connect your trusty printer to your network.

The printer is listed as dual band --

Should you have any issues connecting to OR staying connected to the 5GHz frequency, connect the printer to your router's broadcasted 2.4 frequency network.  The stability is worth any tiny "speed" considerations offered by a faster but possibly wobbly connection.

Connectivity, Std1 USB 2.0 client ; 1 Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, dual band wifi 2.4/5Ghz, BLE

If, after uninstalling / reinstalling the full driver, the connection is still a mess, try connecting (on the Windows side) using a TCP/IP connection type.

Printer Software - Full Driver

Reinstall the full driver printer software

What?

Weird things can happen if the full feature / full driver printer software is corrupted for any reason.

It does not take much to break printer (or other) software.

For example, the list might a corrupted instruction, lost library file, a missing link.

Reinstall the full driver

  • Check / Install any pending Windows Updates
  • If not done as part of Windows Updates, Restart your computer

Next,

Uninstall existing printer software

  • Uninstall existing full driver printer software from Programs and Features.
  • If your printer software includes a separate "help" in Programs and Features, uninstall that, too.
  • Restart the computer and log in.

Install full driver printer software

  • If the printer is connected to the computer using a printer USB cable, remove / disconnect the cable before loading the software.

Web Pack Installation - Web Page - Full Driver Printer Software

Download, Save, and Install

Notes

  • If using a USB cable to connect the printer to your computer, connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the software installation process.
  • Select and download the web package to your computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where file is saved, likely Downloads

  • Right-Click on the downloaded sp* installation file > Select: Run as Administrator

  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

The full driver will be listed in Programs and Features AND in Settings > Apps > Installed Apps (Windows 11)

Next,

  • The full driver printer software will have added one or more "container" shortcuts on the Desktop:

  • Printer Assistant - named for the printer model

OR

On newer printers and when the new full driver printer software no longer supports the Printer Assistant:

  • Scan Assistant - named for itself

AND

  • The full driver printer software, once installed, will have added a shortcut icon for HP Scan

NOTE > Model Dependent

The shortcut for HP Scan that is part of the full driver might be named for the printer model.

Device -  Windows - Printer - TCP/IP connection type

It is important that Windows Updates AND the printer's own full driver printer software are kept current and in peak condition.

>>> Ask if you need / want help to (re)install the printer software.

>>> Include your printer model and OS / version.

The printer might respond better to a TCP/IP connection type (in addition to the Static IP address setup).

-------------------- --------------------

Method – Windows - Create TCP IP port (InkJet Printer) - Change connection type

Method - Create / Change-to TCP/IP port

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

Find the printer's IPv4 address

Print a Configuration Page

OR

Tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address

Next,

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Select Printer > Printer Properties

OR (older versions of Windows)
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click the printer > Left-Click Printer Properties

Tab Ports
Click Add Port

Select Standard TCP/IP Port

Select New Port and follow the instructions
Type in the correct IP address for the printer
