I recently installed the latest version software, ver. 40.12 on my HP OfficeJet Pro. Unfortunately, this software essentially disabled my printer.

 

I almost always print in black only. When my yellow cartridge got low, the original software gave a warning, and offered the option to print black only. This option is now gone.

 

I can't find the earlier version driver on the HP driver site. How can I rollback to an earlier version, or uninstall the printer and drivers and install with an earlier driversion?

Hi,

The software allow printing in black only for a short time when there is still some color cartridge left, not once any of the cartridges is empty

 

Use Black Ink Only? or Use Color Ink Only? – these messages mean one of the cartridges is out of ink, but you can continue printing for a short time using the other cartridges. You can print either in grayscale, or in composite black. You will very soon have to replace the cartridge. This message may not appear in some cases, depending on how you print.

This is how the pritner works, eiuther with the previous version or the latest one with no difference, you cannot print once any ink is completely empty with such a printer:
