HP8615

I have an HP8615 all in one printer scanner that we use for printing and scanning from our MacBook Pro. Used to work fine with our old MBP running Monterey. Got a new MBP running Sequoia, 15.x. Installed latest HP SW and drivers. Set up a preset to do double sided scanning in exactly the same way as before.

Now put a document in ADF, it scans the first sides and then just hangs, spinning cursor, Easy Scan unresponsive. Often have to power cycle MBP to get things back.

MacOS and HO SW up to date. Has happened with every MacOS update since we got the MBP in December. Yes it can be worked round by single sided scanning and reordering pages. But that is only practical in smaller documents.

Have deleted and remade the double sided preset more than once.

fire up my old MBP running Monterey and double sided scanning works fine.

Are HP going to fix what is obviously a bug in their SW? I see from other posts that this has been going on for sometime. Or can anyone suggest possible fixes or alternative scanning software that actually works.

Hi @Turnbacktime,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding double-sided scanning issues with HP OfficeJet 8615 on macOS 15.x!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Verify Compatibility:

  • Confirm that your HP OfficeJet 8615 is fully supported by macOS 15.x. Sometimes, newer macOS versions might have compatibility issues with certain printer/scanners.

Update Drivers and Software:

  • Ensure that the latest version of the HP Easy Scan software and drivers are installed on your Mac. Check the HP website for any recent updates or patches.

Restart Devices:

  • Restart both the printer and the MacBook Pro. This can sometimes resolve temporary glitches causing the software to hang.

Check Scanner Settings:

  • Open HP Easy Scan and verify that the settings for double-sided scanning are correctly configured.
  • Ensure that the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) option is selected for input.

Check for HP Easy Scan Updates:

  • Open the App Store on your Mac, go to updates, and check if there are any updates for HP Easy Scan. Updating the app might fix any bugs present in the version you’re currently using.

Check macOS Updates:

  • Go to "System Preferences" > "Software Update" and ensure your Mac is running the latest version of macOS 15.x. Sometimes updates contain fixes for known issues with hardware compatibility.

Test ADF:

  • Verify that the ADF is working correctly by scanning a single-sided document. Check for physical obstructions or jams in the feeder.

Try a Different App:

  • Test scanning a double-sided document using a different scanning app like Apple's built-in Preview application. This will help determine if the issue is specific to HP Easy Scan or to the hardware itself.

Adjust Energy Settings:

  • Ensure your Mac’s energy settings are not interfering with HP Easy Scan. Go to "System Preferences" > "Energy Saver" and adjust settings to prevent your Mac from sleeping during scanning.

I hope this helps.

If HP website reports it see me running MacOS 15 and offers me drivers and software can I take that as confirmation my device is compatible?

I have tried everything yiu mention except for another app. Not sure if Apple Preview or Image Caoture support double side scan.

there are multiple threads in this forum about this same issue with multiple different printers. Most have a comment about HP being aware of Easy Scan problems with MacOS 15 and are working them. But 9 months since public release of MacOS 15 that excuse is wearing rather thin. Double sided scanning is an expected feature with such a device.

Hi @Turnbacktime,

Thank you for sharing all these details. I truly understand how frustrating it is when a core feature like double-sided scanning stops working, especially when everything worked fine before. I really appreciate your patience and the time you’ve spent troubleshooting this.

While our teams continue to work on Easy Scan compatibility with macOS 15, here are a few additional steps you can try right now that sometimes help resolve this issue:

Reset the Printing System

Resetting the macOS printing system can help clear out any stuck scanner drivers or corrupt configurations.

Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners

Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list on the left

Select Reset Printing System…

Confirm the reset

Add your HP 8615 again, then try scanning double-sided.

Try HP Smart Instead of Easy Scan

Some customers have better results with HP Smart for scanning. Please check:

Download the latest HP Smart from the Mac App Store

Open HP Smart and set up your printer

Try using Scan > Document Feeder > 2-sided (Duplex) if the option appears

Note: HP Smart’s scanning features vary by printer and OS version, but it’s worth trying if you haven’t yet.

Use Image Capture (Limited)

Image Capture can sometimes handle basic double-sided ADF scanning, depending on the model.

Open Image Capture

Select your printer on the left

Choose Document Feeder as the source

Look for an option like "Duplex" or "2-sided scan" in the details pane.

If the option doesn’t appear, it’s likely a driver limitation.

Check for Rosetta

If you have an Apple Silicon Mac (M1/M2/M3), ensure that Easy Scan is running under Rosetta 2, which can sometimes improve compatibility:

Find HP Easy Scan in your Applications folder.

Right-click > Get Info.

If you see "Open using Rosetta," check the box.

Restart Easy Scan and try again.

I hope this helps.

I haven’t had chance to reset the printing system and don’t want to do that for a few days because of things I have to do.

HP Smart doesn’t offer double sided scanning with my printer

Image Capture doesn’t offer double sided scanning with my printer

Forcing Easyscan to use Rosetta doesn’t make any difference.

Everything is pointing to this being an Easy Scan issue.

Just installed drivers and Easy Scan on a friend MBP running same OS. Exactly same issue with my 8615.

used an app called Pdfscanner, he had installed, and double sided scanning worked fine.

please get your SW team to fix Easy Scan. I shouldn’t have to buy an app to get a standard feature to work.

You're absolutely right to be frustrated—double-sided scanning should be a basic feature.

In the meantime, here are a few workarounds that might help:

🛠️ Temporary Fixes You Can Try

  • Use HP Smart App
While not ideal for bulk scanning, it allows manual duplex scanning and may be more stable on macOS 15.x.
  • Try an Older Version of Easy Scan
If you have access to a Time Machine backup, restoring HP Easy Scan v1.10.0 has worked for some users on macOS 15.3.

Hopefully HP rolls out a fix soon—this feature deserves to work out of the box.

Thanks. I will need to look at the Smart app again. It didn’t seem to offer me duplex when I looked at it. Should have old Time Machine backups from my old MBP, I will investigate.

@Turnbacktime

That sounds like a solid plan—and you’re covering all the right bases. The HP Smart app’s duplex functionality isn’t always obvious, especially with older printer models. It sometimes hides the two-sided scanning option under “Advanced Settings” or only displays it once a document feeder is detected.

If your printer uses a flatbed scanner, manual duplex might be the only option it offers (scan one side, flip the page, scan the other).

As for your Time Machine backups—that could be the jackpot. If you’re able to restore a stable version of Easy Scan (like v1.10.0), it might dodge the bugs introduced in later updates that conflict with macOS Sequoia. Just make sure to disable automatic updates so it doesn’t silently replace the working version again.

If you want a hand checking which version to restore or testing duplex settings in Smart, I’d be glad to walk through it with you. Let’s get double-sided scanning feeling double easy 😄📄.
