My printer does not seem to be able to scan via WiFi, although it prints OK.  Also works fine with USB.  On WiFi, the scanner gets stuck on preview.

Deleted all drivers and back to Easy Start, then get stuck on "unable to communicate with the device", even though the printer is recognized in the initial scan! Both via same network and direct WiFi methods failed in the same way.

With Easy Start failing, tried to add printer via Bonjour. Device recognized and tried secure Air.  Device installs.  Printer works via WiFi, but I get "Waiting for scanner", then,"Failed to open session on the device. (-9927)".

@warpspeed, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Update the printer firmware

HP regularly releases new printer firmware versions with product enhancements or issue fixes. Depending on your printer, apps on the printer control panel might also receive updates. Update firmware and apps on a regular basis to make sure you are getting the most out of your printer. Refer to this link for help.

Also, try other methods of scanning. Refer to the document HP Printers - How to Scan (Mac) for help.

If the issue persists, try the following troubleshooting steps-

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
  • Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Restart your printer and the Computer
  • Try Scanning.

Let me know the outcome.
