Envy 4501
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have had my Envy 4501 for some time and it has worked great up until now. I recently restored my Windows 10 machine and have had problems installing the drivers on it. I can verify the IP address of the printer and windows sees it on the network without issue. My other computers and smartphones in the house can connect and print without issue. I have downloaded the latest drivers and software but the installers fail every time. I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple time, restarting the printer and the computer each time.

If I open the device manager and locate the device (when connected via USB) and have Windows search for drivers for it I receive an error stating that the driver can not be installed due to a policy blocking NT 4.0 drivers. The AIO Remote software sees the printer but says that it mus be installed to use but the installer fails at the driver install.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please know that you in no way overloaded me with troubleshooting steps. They were rather rudimentary for an advanced user like myself. I did run the P&S Doctor but it was unable to locate any problems as there were no drivers installed for it to find issue with. Also, booting the computer in safe mode will allow you do delete all the files in the local user temp folder (%temp%). While waiting for a response, I had found those step which also failed to resolve the issue.
I was able to resolve the issue after following those steps and then accessing the Windows 'Print Server Properties' (printui.exe) and manually removing the HP driver from the driver panel, then manually added a TCP/IP port using the IP address assigned by my router. At that point, Windows not only saw the printer but also installed the driver without incident. You might want to consider adding those additional steps into your knowledge base for future reference.

I do not wish to be confrontational and I apologize if my response comes across that way.  I do hope that you have a great week as well and I wish you many quickly solved cases.

Hi @KnightStar76,

Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you. Smiley Happy I reviewed the post regarding printer installation issues. I will be delighted to assist you here. Smiley Happy

Superb description and stupendous diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. Smiley Happy. It is greatly appreciated. Smiley Happy

For me to assist you with accurate information I would require more information.

  • Did you run the print and scan doctor?

It looks like the issue is with the computer as it works correctly with other devices.

Please perform these steps first.

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then create a new local user account which is an administrator account from this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/instantanswers/5de907f1-f8ba-4fd9-a89d-efd23fee918c/create-a-loc... and then restart the computer again and login with the new user account.

Then run the print and scan doctor utility from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02073861   and check if the issue is corrected. If it is not please download the full feature software from this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-envy-4500-e-all-in-one-printer-series/5304875/mo... and install it using the new user account after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should do the trick for you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, please. Please note that I am not overloading you with a lot of troubleshooting steps. Instead, just like you, I am eager to ensure that the problem gets resolved. So I am providing you with more resources and information at your disposal to deal with the situation better.

Hope this helps.   I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

After days/weeks of struggeling, multiple reinstallations of windows and drivers, and trying all the solutions offered in the various forums I finally solved the problem for my printer:

printer: HP Envy 4500

- PROBLEM: after a windows 10 update the driver was not working anymore. I got a message like 'driver seems not to be installed...'.

- I installed the printer again. The printer was visible in the netwerk but during the installation it failed.

- tried installing windows again and again. Everytime printer was working untill windows updated.

- tried HP docter

- tried uninstall, emptying Temp folders, delete everything, making local admin accounts and all the other sugestions you can find on the forum.

- during one of the uninstalls I got the message 'couldn't remove prnhpcl1.inf'.  Tried to remove it manually: didnt work.

- installed windows again. installed all the possible updates before installing the printer. Installed the printer. Installation seemed to work!... but unfortunatelly when printing i got the same message again 'driver seems not to be installed'.

- I don't know why but then I navigated tot C:/WINDOWS/INF/prnhpcl1.inf and rightclicked the file and clicked 'install'.

...

- Printer working again! 8-P

Hope this works for others as well!!!
