My Envy4520 Printing Shortcuts for Two-Sided (Duplex) Printing used to say "Print on Both Sides."  I went to print a document on my laptop but now Printing Shortcuts says "Print on Both Sides Manually."  This happened yesterday after I switched to a new internet provider, though the network name remained the same.  I went to Devices & Printers > HP ENVY 4520 Series (Network) > Properties > Device Settings, changed Automatic Configuration from "off" to "Update Now", and it changed the Automatic Duplexing Unit setting to "Installed."  I clicked Apply and OK, and re-opened the document, clicked the "Print" icon, and Printing Shortcuts still said "Print on Both Sides Manually."  Then I did the "Update Now" thing again, and then rebooted, but "Printing Shortcuts" still showed "Print on Both Sides Manually."  How do I get the change to "Installed" stick?  Note 1: I had the document also on my iPhone, and printed it two-sided from there with no problem.  Note 2: I had this same problem when I changed my laptop 6 months ago and cloned the old hard drive to the new one, but I did "something" to make the "Installed" setting stick, and now I don't remember how I resolved it then.  Help, please?  Thank you.

Hi @CETiger,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand how frustrating it can be when your printer suddenly starts asking to print on both sides manually, especially when it was working fine before.

Try creating a new user account and installing the printer driver to see if that resolves the issue. Try these steps to create a new user account -

1) Tap the Windows icon.
2) Select Settings.
3) Tap Accounts.
4) Select Family & other users.
5) Tap "Add someone else to this PC."
6) Select "I don't have this person's sign-in information."
7) Select "Add a user without a Microsoft account."
😎 Enter a username, type the account's password twice, enter a clue, and select Next.
9) Tap the Windows icon.
10) Select the User icon at the upper left corner of the Start menu.
11) Select the new user. You'll then sign in to your account using the password from step 8.

You may try these steps and see if that works

1) Right-click on the printer, select Printer Properties.
2) Select the Device settings tab.
3) Ensure that the duplex unit is set to Installed rather than Not installed.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware. Refer to this document for steps

Let me know. Take care

Nal_NR, thank you for your reply.  "Use a USB cable to temporarily connect your printer to the computer" helped, so I can provide better info now.

I have two 4520's in my Devices & Printers: HP ENVY 4520 series, and HP ENVY 4520 series (Network).  I always use "Network" because my office area is in the basement and the 4520 is upstairs.  I checked to make sure the printer software and firmware are up to date.  Then I shut the laptop down and took it, connected the printer via the USB cable, and booted up.  The Device Settings tab for the "not-Network" 4520 showed that the duplex unit is installed!  I printed the document I needed and it was duplexed, hooray!

The Device Settings tab for the Network instance still showed Not Installed, so I did the Automatic Update which changed it to Installed, and clicked Apply and OK.  I did a shutdown and went back to my office, booted up, opened the document, hit Print and selected "4520 (Network)" and the Printing Shortcuts dialog box still said "Print on Both Sides Manually."  I checked Devices & Printers and the 4520 (Network) Device Settings indeed said Duplexing is Not Installed.  😞  I selected the other 4520 instance, figuring that would not print because that instance is for when it's USB-connected, and sure enough, nothing printed.  The printer was offline.  I canceled the document in the print queue.

So the issue comes down to how to get the Automatic Duplexing recognized as Installed when the 4520 is WiFi-connected, since Duplexing is recognized as Installed when it's USB-connected.  Any advice will be appreciated.  Thanks.
