Hi @fleetwoodmack,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy 7200e prints a local test page fine but shows “Permission Denied” when printing files or screens on Linux, the issue is usually related to CUPS permissions or user access rights, not the printer itself.

Why This Happens

  • Linux uses CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) for print jobs.
  • If your user account doesn’t have proper permissions or the printer is not set as the default, you’ll see “Permission Denied.”
  • Sometimes, AppArmor or SELinux policies block printing.

Steps to Fix It

1. Check Printer Status

Run: lpstat -p -d

  • Confirms printer name and default status.

2. Add Your User to the lpadmin Group

Run: sudo usermod -aG lpadmin $USER

Then log out and back in.

3. Restart CUPS Service

Run: sudo systemctl restart cups

4. Check Permissions

Run: lpinfo -v

Ensure your printer URI is correct (e.g., usb://HP/... or ipp://...).

5. Reinstall HP Plugin

Install HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing): sudo apt-get install hplip hplip-gui

Then run: hp-setup

Follow prompts to configure the printer.

6. Test Print

Run: lp filename.pdf

If it works, your permissions are fixed.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
