Hi @RC1201

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it must be to see the error 554 every time you try to use Scan to Email on your HP OfficeJet Mobile 250. You’ve already been patient in checking the basics, and the message about “wrong Date in Header line” points to a communication mismatch between the printer and the mail server.

Let’s go step by step to clear this.

Steps to resolve Error 554 during Scan to Email

1. Verify printer date and time settings

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Preferences > Date and Time.
  • Make sure the date, time, and time zone are correct.
  • If the printer’s clock is off, email servers may reject the header as invalid.

2. Check SMTP server configuration

  • On the printer, open Setup > Web Services > Scan to Email Setup.
  • Confirm the SMTP server name, port, and authentication details match your email provider’s requirements.
  • Common ports: 587 (TLS), 465 (SSL).
  • Ensure the “From” email address is valid and matches the account credentials.

3. Test with another email account

  • If possible, configure Scan to Email with a different provider (for example, Gmail or Outlook).
  • This helps confirm whether the issue is with the printer’s settings or the mail server rejecting the header.

4. Update printer firmware

5. Use the HP App as an alternative

  • If Scan to Email continues to fail, you can scan using the HP App on your mobile or computer.
  • From the app, send the scanned file directly via your email client.
  • This bypasses the printer’s SMTP configuration and avoids header errors.

The error is most often caused by incorrect date/time on the printer or mismatched SMTP settings. Correcting those and updating firmware usually resolves the issue.

You’ve already been very thorough, and the next best step is to confirm the printer’s clock and re‑enter the SMTP details carefully.

Hello Hawks_Eye.

thanks for your response. Unfortunately it Looks Like that the Date Cannot be changed Manually. Theres is no Option in the Menu.
smtp optional are Set correctly and trial mail Works. Problem Must be the header and Date. „Jan 1970“

many Thanks

Thanks for all your patience and efforts.

I understand how frustrating this must feel—especially since you’ve already confirmed that the SMTP options are set correctly and even tested with a trial mail successfully. The fact that the header is showing “Jan 1970” points to a system clock or firmware timekeeping issue rather than a configuration error.

To narrow this down further, could you share a bit more detail:

  • Does the device show the correct date and time on its control panel, or is it also incorrect there?

  • Have you recently updated the firmware on the HP Mobile 250, or is it still running the original version?

  • When sending mail, does the error occur consistently with every attempt, or only intermittently?

  • Is the printer connected directly to the network, or through a computer acting as a relay?

Once we know whether the internal clock is misaligned or if the firmware is outdated, we can focus on either refreshing the firmware or resetting the device’s timekeeping functions. This will help ensure the headers are stamped correctly and the SMTP server accepts the messages.

Take care, and have an incredible day ahead!
