I have an Officejet Pro 8600 (N911a).  I received a message telling me to replace the magenta cartridge.  I did this and then I received an error message stting that I had a system or ink error.   I replaced the magenta with a new one and then received an error message stating that one or more cartridges were damaged, and indicated that it was the magenta cartridge.  I replacedit with one I just pruchased and I still get the message.  And so, I cannot print or copy.  The printer is probably 10 yeears old.  Do I need to do something else or do I possibly need a new print driver?

Hi @Grantlady,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding printer or ink system errors on the HP Officejet Pro 8600!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure the cartridge is the correct model for the HP Officejet Pro 8600 and is genuine HP ink. Sometimes, third-party or refilled cartridges can cause issues.

Remove and Reinstall Cartridges:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  • Open the cartridge access door and remove all cartridges.
  • Inspect the cartridges for any damage or leakage, especially on the electrical contacts.
  • Reinsert the cartridges one by one, ensuring they are seated properly in their slots.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:

  • Gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Similarly, clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer.

Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the outlet and the printer’s power port, and turn on the printer.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause errors with newer cartridges.

Try Another Cartridge:

  • If possible, try using another new magenta cartridge in case the replacement cartridge itself is defective.

Run Printer Diagnostic Tools:

  • Use HP's diagnostic utilities (if available) to check for additional issues that might not be visible.

I hope this helps.
