For a while, I've been plagued with the issue where I could not utilize HP's UPD to automatically configure my devices on my print server. The process would start, then it would tell me there was a communication error, proceed to the fancy finding the device process, then dump me back to the printer properties window. HP told me to contact my local IT team which is laughable.
But, I finally found the answer! The UPD configuration process simply cannot handle custom SNMP strings.
That's it. That's all there is to it.
When you go to set up your printer, do everything, but save the SNMP info on the port for your last step. Run automatic configuration and let it do its thing.
Then, go back and add the SNMP info to the printer and the port. Voila! It works.
If anyone from the UPD team sees this, please fix this!
