Everytime printer starts from power button, it stalls on HP logo screen and won't initialize. Only way I can start printer is to cycle power from the outlet. Getting frustrating. Printer is "out of warranty" though I just took it out of the box and set it up. Firmware updated.

Hi @RJSteele,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can understand how frustrating this is, especially when the printer is brand new and stalls on the HP logo screen every time you power it on. This behavior usually points to a firmware initialization issue or a corrupted startup sequence.

Here’s what you can do:

Step 1: Hard Power Reset

  1. Turn the printer OFF.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 2–3 minutes.
  4. Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  5. Power it ON.

(You mentioned cycling power works; this confirms the printer can boot after a full power drain.)

Step 2: Disable “Auto Power On”

  • If enabled, this feature sometimes conflicts with initialization.
  • On the printer’s control panel: Setup → Preferences → Auto Power On → Off.

Step 3: Update Firmware via USB

Even if you updated before, re-flash the firmware:

  • Download the latest firmware for your model: 👉 Official HP® Support
  • Connect the printer to your PC via USB.
  • Run the HP Firmware Update Utility.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
