HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e Wide Format All-in-One Printer
macOS 15.0 Sequoia

Hi,

I bought a new printer office jet Pro 9720e and installing it was really easy, but i ran into a problem when I wanted to print something on my computer. The printing waiting list gives an error message "certificate expired".

I downloaden the latest HP app and went on the IP address of the printer to make a new certificate. That did not work.

Then I went online to look for the correct driver from HP. I have a Mac computer with OS Sequoia 15.5, but I can only choose windows online as a OS. Is there no correct driver yet for my OS? I tried to install a wide driver, but it will go up to Sequoia 15.0 or older.

Now I have a new printer which I can't use...

How can I solve this?

Kind regards.

Hi @Gert19,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

You set up your new HP OfficeJet Pro 9720e easily, but when printing from your Mac running macOS Sequoia 15.5, you get a "certificate expired" error. Creating a new certificate via the printer’s IP page didn’t work. You also noticed HP’s drivers only support up to Sequoia 15.0, so you can’t find an official driver for 15.5.

Confirm macOS & HP Smart App

Make sure your Mac is updated to macOS Sequoia 15.5 with the latest patches.

Reinstall or update the HP Smart app from the Mac App Store (HP is shifting to using HP Smart instead of traditional drivers for new models).

Reset Printing System on Mac

Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click in the printer list area → choose Reset Printing System.

Re-add your OfficeJet Pro 9720e using AirPrint/Bonjour instead of the manual driver, if available.

Use AirPrint Instead of HP Driver

The 9720e supports AirPrint, which works without a dedicated driver.

When adding the printer, select Use: AirPrint (instead of “HP OfficeJet driver”).

This bypasses certificate issues and ensures compatibility with macOS 15.5.

Check Date/Time on Printer

On the printer’s control panel, verify that date and time are correct.

An incorrect clock can cause "certificate expired" errors.

Force New Self-Signed Certificate

Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) via its IP address.

Under Networking > Advanced > Certificates, delete the old certificate and generate a new one.

Restart both printer and Mac afterward.

Temporary Workaround

If AirPrint still fails, try printing via HP Smart app directly.

HP Smart allows file upload and printing without depending on certificates.

Driver Availability

As of now, HP’s site might not list Sequoia 15.5 yet because it’s a very new release.

HP typically updates driver packages after Apple’s OS rollout, until then, AirPrint or HP Smart app are the official workarounds.

I hope this helps.
