I'd been using my F4280 without problem for several years, mostly from the Solution Center menu link. A few days ago I found the link had mysteriously vanished from the Win10 menu. I downloaded the installation software again, but after trying several times got the same error msg: "Fatal error during installation...(...hpzsetup.exe)...Install error Win8...Uninstalling...".
During install, msg said "Win10 detected" "D/L DJ_A10_03_F4200_NonNet_Full_WW_140_404_4 183794KB", so I don't understand why Install Error Win8 came up. (It also placed a link on Desktop "Installation error-Win8".)
I gave the printer a try, by printing a pre-existing PDF through Adobe. This worked, but there's still no Soution Center, so I don't know how I'll Scan to PDF.
(My setup is Lenovo T410; 4MBRam; 133MHz clock; Win10(x64) v 1709 bld 16299.309). I wonder if this is a case of a hopeless compatibility mismatch.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.
As I understand, printer installation failed,
No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
Are you able to make a photocopy?
How is your printer connected to PC (USB or Wi-Fi)?
Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:
Uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP DeskJet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
To reinstall, click here.
If you get the error message while downloading drivers from HP Website, please try installing using Windows Built-in Print Driver: http://hp.care/2igKeU1
If the issue persists, please create a new user account following steps from the link: Click here.
Then download the drivers in the new user account.
Keep me posted,
Have a great day 🙂
Cheers!

I'll have a go at your method when I get more time, probably over the weekend. I had already tried deleting and reinstalling twice, using Revo Uninstaller in 'moderately aggressive' mode.
Yes, I am able to make a photocopy, using the printer buttons. I am also able to print a PDF from the printer icon in Adobe Reader. It's a USB connection.
The first time, I ran the (apparently irrelevant) 'Installation error - Win8', and clicking on Solution Center gave an error saying something like 'hpcqdirec.exe' could not be found. The second reinstall now gives an 'Installation Incomplete' message.
