Once, I wanted to print 2 pages per sheet on a 20 page print job. I went to Printer Properties and set it accordingly. It worked fine. The next time I printed something about a week later, it printed 2 sheets per page, so I went back in and told it to print 1 page per sheet. That worked fine. Ever since then, every time I print, it is still set at 2 pages per sheet, no matter how many times I change it. I have tried shutting down my laptop as well as the printer. It is the "Factory Default" that is set wrong. How can I get it back to normal printing? Every time I print, I have to go into the settings and set it back to 1 page per sheet. I mostly print from Word, Excel, or PDF files. I can't delete the printer setting because it's the factory default and can't be deleted. I have added some new ones that work fine, but the printer doesn't choose those settings as the first choice. It always chooses "Factory Default."

Welcome to the HP Community --

Depending on your printer model , the full driver printer software that manages it, and any changes you might have made (deliberately or accidentally), the following might be helpful.

One of the features of Printing Preferences includes selecting any of the Templates (lock  🔒) or previously created Custom Shortcuts (star  ) and modifying the settings.   The selected Template / Custom Shortcut can be used "as if" or further modified to the current job settings.

Generally, when it's desired to make any edited settings available for later, changes are saved using "Save As" and assigning a name for the new "Custom Shortcut".

It can be possible to change a Template (lock) though without having created a Custom Shortcut, the modifications to the Template might not be apparent.

-- Try / Consider --

Open Printing Preferences

Select the Factory Defaults template

Select the Reset button

Select OK to save the changes and Exit

-- Reset --

"Revert the print settings for the selected shortcut to the original saved settings"

Sample

What else?

How to change / assign the Job Defaults

Printing Preferences will normally leave whatever the selected Shortcut as "active" when exiting Printing Preferences.  The "change" lasts only until something changes the current shortcut to different shortcut.

-- Reminder --

Some changes are not fully "set in place" until and when the changes are made and Printing Preferences is closed (exit).   Custom Paper Size forms is an example that requires the full "Create, Name, Save, and Exit".

The "something" can be a user change --

For example,

A new job is started, Properties or Printing Preferences is opened, and a (different) Template or Custom Shortcut is selected.  When Properties / Printing Preferences is closed, suddenly a "different" Shortcut is left as "selected".

-- Important --

Printing Preferences cannot control Printing Defaults for all jobs.

Printing Preferences can be instructed to select one of its templates or shortcuts as the "Default" for all jobs.

The instructions for setting an all jobs Default are found in (come from)

Printer Properties > Tab Advanced > Printing Defaults

-- Printing Defaults - How-to --

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners

Select your Printer

Select Printer Properties

Tab Advanced

Lower left corner of the menu:  Printing Defaults

Select a Printing Preferences Template or Custom Shortcut as the "all jobs" default.

Save and exit.
